Bodyshop and Warranty
 
Hi fellow jeepers, I got a question here....I took my jeep for an offroad trip and my girlfriend took the wheel over for a while and then backed into a tree.:( There's now some damage to the right rear of the car. Checked with the dealership and it takes a lot of $$ to fix. My friend recommended me to go to another bodyshop which is much cheaper. The jeep is still under its factory warranty, and my question is, does it matter which bodyshop I take it to? If I replace a few parts (they need to redo some welding and painting too) at a random bodyshop, would that void the warranty or that has nothing to do it at all?

Your dealer will take you for a ride. Get estimates in other body shops. Your insurance company usually has a list of approved shops too,

Warranty doesn't cover body damage or abuse.

I have to disagree with Roger.

My past experience (many years in the body shop industry) has shown me that dealership body shops are held to a higher standard than some of the "cheap" body shops because they are expected by their customers to return the vehicle (Jeep not car BTW) to factory specifications.

When shopping body shops look at some of their work before you decide if you want them to repair your vehicle. Check for things like paint match and finish, panel alignment, evenness of gaps between body panels and if the vehicle has been properly detailed. You'll get what you pay for and in this case, it might be worth the price of your deductible to let your insurance handle it.

If a dealer doesn't do the repairs, then your factory warranty will not cover the areas that have been repaired ie: paint peeling or fading, broken welds, misaligned body panels, leaky glass and so on. Any reputable shop will offer a written warranty on repairs, be sure you ask for it before submitting your Jeep for repairs.

Another thing to consider is that if you go with a dealer you will have less trouble getting OEM parts on your Jeep. Gypo outfits save money sometimes by using aftermarket parts. Not that aftermarket is always bad, but they are more often problematical and of a lesser quality than OEM parts.

Whichever you choose, remember, you get what you pay for. Spending a little more now will protect the investment you've made in your Jeep.
