Your reccomendations & pics for YJ replacement seats (vinyl)

We are planning the restoration of our new YJ's interior. This ole jeep is white with tan interior, and we want to keep the tan for the most part. We have also thought about going to spice colored seats, but our dash pad is in good shape and I'd like to keep it tan.

I've found good information on the other stuff (dash, herculiner, etc) that we want to do but haven't scraped up many reviews or (importantly) many pictures of newly installed replacement seats. We are looking at Bestop and Rugged Ridge recliners.

What do you have or what would you recommend? I'd want vinyl for ease of cleaning and to keep the seats well under the $250 mark per.

Also, has anyone rebuilt and recovered the original equipment seats and if so how much did this set you back?

New seats are going to be expensive. If it doesn't fall too far out of your realm, I think you can find some good seat covers to match your theme that would look great and cost a whole lot less...Just my 2 cents though.

Just put in a new driver's seat today. Got the fixed Trailmax II from Bestop, and bought through quadratec for $145 (price matched 4wheelparts.com). Don't have a pic, but they are so much more firm and comfortable than the oem ones, and the back isn't held up by a baseball bat anymore.

Colors are black, gray and spice. Tan dash? Sure it's not spice?

You could go with black seats and do a black and tan theme. I know first hand Black and Tan at an Irish bar is a tasty concoction!!!

Copelydad,

Hey, I was thinking the same thing about tan vs. spice, but I have seen a few vendors offer a tan, and a spice seperately. The spice seat is usually darker.

Yes definitely going to do a variation on black and tan. We are going to keep the tan dash pad, paint the lower dash panels covering the gauges black, restore the steering column by painting it black (currently tan but all scratched up and faded from keys and the sun) and buying a black grant steering wheel with new jeep insert. The seats we will reskin or replace in tan (or spice) and if we go to spice seats we'll replace all the bar padding. Of course like lots of folks we are going to herculine the whole tub and throw in some slush mats to finish it out. While the seats are out, we'll repair and rustproof any trouble spots and restore the seat frames.

I know this is a laundry list but admittedly we are just getting our budget together for this. I think we'll do the simple stuff like the dash restoration first and then move into the herculiner, etc once we have saved up for the seats.

If anyone has a picture of their recent interior restoration, please post. Want to get ideas on seats, consoles, etc.. Thanks guys.

Project87, is that a right hand drive Jeep or am I (you) missing something?

Project87YJ 09-02-2010 11:15 PM

No it left hand drive. At the time the pic was taken I only had the passenger side seat installed because I was waiting on the new seat slider for the driver's side to come in.

I got these at JC Whitney for only $106 each delivered in June on sale. Still Great seats.

If you're looking for inexpensive seat covers, these are really nice. I have the black and gray ones. How can you beat $25 a piece. I'm real happy with them. They come off easy if you need to hose them down too!

He said seats not seat covers. My old seat frames were bent back too far for me to use. So no, a seat cover would not work.

Point was if you find some decent seats like I did, but not the right color...covers work find. Most driver's side seats are shot. I just used a passenger seat on the driver's side. Who cares if the reclining lever is on the right. Driver's was tan, passenger's red... So SEAT COVER'S were the answer.

Point taken Gleen, seat covers are an alternative.

That's good marketing copy right there. "Bestop Seats: Not held up with a baseball bat."

Thanks for your support.

Whatever seats you go with, it's amazing how much nicer the new ones feel. I'm a huge fan of old-school stuff, but boy, a new seat just feels great. If you get them rebuilt, I recommend all new foam as well. And, unfortunately, that usually means it's cheaper to buy new. That sounds like a sales pitch, but I don't mean it that way. There are lots of seats out there. You'll get what you want!

BLATANT SALES PITCH: If you do think about Bestop, we're running a $20 rebate right now. Available at your favorite retailer. (hey- I get paid for this!).

Geoff@bestop,

Do you have any pictures of the spice trailmax II sport seats actually in a jeep? I agree that new seats will probably be more economical overall.

Something else I am confused on is the difference between "tan" and "spice" colors. I don't have any pictures yet to post of our jeep but I think the interior is definitely tan. Does anyone know the actual color options for a 91?

We were looking in to purchasing something like the trailmax seat below, or possibly the rugged ridge equivalent. I like the more classic look so the corbeau moabs, while nice, are probably out for this build.

As I probably mentioned, we are going to paint the lower dash and gauge covers black, paint the steering column black, get a grant steering wheel in black with a jeep button, herculine the floor, and get the tan seats to go with the tan rollbar covers, dash pad, and back seat. We'll finish out the interior with some OEM style three point seatbelts in red with red grab handles on the cross bars, and I've been looking at a possible mounting kit for the eventual red hi lift jack for the sport bar that might work out too. This is a big project, really we're just starting to plan for it, probably several months away from taking it on. We want to repaint the top frame, seat frames, and all that stuff first.
