Buying a First Jeep

I am a student in high school and about to buy my first car. I know I want a jeep wrangler tj and have a $8000 spending. Im still not sure when deciding on a 4cyl or 6cyl engine. I have found a 98 4cyl in excellent condition and is also lifed 3 inches with only 60,000 miles and is in my price range. I was wondering if this deal is worth it? Or if it be better to find a 6cyl in my price range with higher mileage? I know I have heard the 4cyl in underpowered but I only live in a county where the speed limit is 55 if that helps.

If anybody could give me advice it would help thank you!

I would try and get a 6 cyl

I would recommend that you pass on this one. Yes, a 6 will have more power and a 4 is okay, but when you add a 3" lift you are losing even more power. Try to find a 6 that is as close to stock as you can. Buying a pre-modified jeep is okay if you know enough about them to fix whatever the previous owner has done. Start with a stocker and then work toward building it up yourself. You can probably find a TJ with the 6 in decent shape for that kind of money and maybe even have a little left over to play with.

Oops almost forgot: Welcome to the forum

Keep looking lots out there for $8000. Go with a 6 unless you can get it really cheap should only be around...like $5000. I have a 4 and it is OK but really under powered. Go to Kelly Blue Book web page and look up the value. For what you mentioned $8000 is way too much.

Welcome to the forum :wavey: Congratulations on making a great vehicle choice :)
I6's are very strong engines that last quite a long time when properly maintained so if you find one with higher miles, don't let that scare you off, if it appears to have been taken care of. 200k+ is normal for this motor with proper maintenance. Keep looking, you'll find an I6 that will make you happier than the 4banger will. Someday you just might want to drive it on the highway, to college, or work or even to move away from home... :) And once you own a Wrangler, you'll always want to own one, so you might as well start with the best, and keep it, rather than be looking to upgrade in a year.

don't buy a 4cyl

As your in high school and have 8k cash I would buy a 3-4k Jeep, and invest the rest. A simple $2500 investment now at an avg 8% return would in theory give ya about 640k at age 67. I doubt the Jeep will be around for that long.

Then you wouldn't want to hear that the whole 8k might grow to over 2million right? :D

Your investing comment is the *smart* thing to do, BUT, he is still in high school and doesn't need to worry about things like this yet. Let a kid be a kid, who knows maybe the world ends in 5 years and your saving theory would have been a waste, and he could have had a bad ass jeep. :D IMO you should shop around, buy a jeep thats about 5-6k, and use the rest for lift, tires, etc...

Thank you for all the advice i appreciate it and I think i am definitely going to get a 6cyl. I have found two ads so far in my price range that were higher mileage jeep but well taken care of and 6cyl so hopefully going to check them out this weekend and maybe even make a deal. And thank you guys for the welcoming!
