Dumb question

In 4 wheel should I see a light on the dash indicating that I am in 4 hi or 4 low?

bobjenkins 09-08-2010 09:03 PM

What jeep? I drove a 01 sport and only part time light. and in my 03 rubicon only 4wd light

p1zzaman 09-08-2010 09:05 PM

My 04 tj has a light that says 4wd when I'm in 4lo or 4hi if that helps...

Minn_wild1 09-08-2010 09:49 PM

My part time light isn't working, although the 4wd is... Probably a burned out light in my case. Does your 4wd work?

briancash1013 09-08-2010 10:56 PM

It's a 97 2.5L automatic. I bought it 3 weeks ago. As far as I can tell it works, but I've never had anything with 4wd. Any way I can check to see if it's working?

Hey Brian I have a tj 2002 and my part time light comes on in 4 hi and 4 lo. I never see the fulltime come on, ever. I have just always assumed that was what it was supposed to do. But to be frank, I'm not sure if thats right or not.

The light will tell you if you are in 4WD but not if you're in HI or LOW.

Minn_wild1 09-09-2010 12:57 AM

You will notice a difference if the vehicle is in 4wd. Try it on dirt, not asphalt or concrete (if your not going in a straight line).

Yes I did notice a difference in 4wd when I was leaving work this morning (gravel parking lot) but still no light at all. What does the part time light look like?

On an '02 it will just tell you part time... Since that's all TJ's have, is part time 4x4. The full time light is there because TJ's and some other model (cherokee's, I think) share the same dash and some have a full time 4x4 option...

So how can I tell for sure if it's working?

get it stuck ;)

turn slowly on a semi giving surface in 2wd and in 4WD it should feel much different (like it kinda doesn't want to turn as easily in 4WD.) 4Lo is a steeper gearing so it will feel very torquey. 4HI has same gearing, just turns front and rear Driveshafts.

or jack up all 4 wheels on jack stands and put it in 4wd.

My light stopped working a long time ago and I like it that way. Been driving 4 wheel drive vehicles for over 20 years and I know when it's engaged and when it's not.

On some newer Jeeps the front drive shaft turns in 2WD also. That is because they don't have locking hubs. I know for a fact that it does on my Rubicon.
