bought my first jeep and now I have nock too
I decided to buy the jeep I was talking about in my other post the one about if I should stay away from the 2.5.
I test drove the jeep yesterday and all was well. today I went and bought it and didn't drive it again utile after I bought it. Some one else test drove it after me and now today It has a bad nock. I don't think it was there before. any ways after it runs for a while it gets quieter. I took the belt off to eliminate any of the bolt on stuff and used a engine stethoscope and I think it might be coming from the rockers. It sound alot like a main bearing but doesn't seem to be coming from the bottom, more from the top end, at lest I hope. If it sits not running for a few minutes it gets loud when it starts up like the oil drains from the rockers and when it runs for a while it gets oil and runs somewhat quieter. can the rockers be adjusted or tighten?

hmmmm....the valve train on the 2.5 should be no adjustment. How many miles are on the engine....there could be a wear issue in the top end. Remember, on start-up there is very little oil in the top end and it takes a while for the oil to pump up. Check to make sure you have the proper viscosity oil for the climate. 10W-30 isn't really good for colder climates.
What kind of oil pressure do you have? Is the oil level OK? I seem to remember something about the timing chains on the 2.5...... Help me out here guys....I believe they had some tensioner issues? See if maybe the noise is coming from there. Also, depending on the previous owner and their maintenance habbits....sometimes the oil galleries get sludged up and don't allow the proper flow of oil into the top end. Maybe a flush is in your future...
Just food for thought.

it has 163000 miles. It had new 5w 30 and i changed it to 10 w 30 to see if the thicker oil would help but didn't change
I was told it had gears instead of a timing chain but i hear a little something from possibly there also. there is two bad sounds coming from it,the nock and a almost clicking sound like a slapping timing chain?

They have timing chains.

Was the jeep purchased as private party or dealer?
If dealer take back and address with them.
If private party......hmmmmmm....sorry!

I went back to the dealer today and at first the sales man said they would stand be hide it. they brought it over to the Chrysler dealer to get an estimate and found out it was the timing gear and chain.
The Chrysler dealer charged the other dealer $270. to diagnose the problem and change the water pump so they could diagnose it. the timing chain and gears came in at $445. and now the dealer said they will pay all the $270 and half of the $445.
I should be happy but I found a motor today that has 5000 miles on it. the guy pulled it from his jeep in 97 to put a 350 in it and it's only 4 miles from my house and he wants $650. for it! I would buy it in second but i just dished out $4500 for the jeep yesterday and will be eat Ramen soup utill I get my bank acount up.
I talked to the dealer and told them to just give me the money they would spend on fixing it but I think after they got charged the $270 when it was in just for a estimate they no longer wanted to go that route.
they will be doing the work tomorrow
I cant believe a chain can make all that noise.
I will post after I get it back to tell you if it fixed.
