1st jeep. Serious problems. Any ideas are welcome
 
I am in the military and recently transferred out to Oahu. I just bought an '88 YJ, its a straight 6 4.2L and I have serious problems. First is that my wife hates it but thats a different story. Thought I would list concerns, throw in some pictures and look for some advice/ideas. Any input is welcome.
Issues
1. Death wobble somewhere between 50-60mph
2. Have oil leaking in several areas. Might just be the valve cover gasket. Know that is leaking a lot.
3. Whatever pump is on top of the front driver side wheel well knocks whenever the ignition is on.
4. Something else is knocking, might be the valves.
5. Jeep looks like it is leaning to the drivers side but I'm not sure.
6. The front driver side wheel is definitely shifted back several inches farther than the passenger side wheel.
7. I know I need new tires bad.
8. I have a lot of rust on the underside of the vehicle but I don't know if how big of a deal that is.
9. Suspension is very tight and something jingles like a set of keys from the front end of the jeep every time I hit a bump.
10. I need to get fenders because I am tired of the thing flinging mud but they need to be pretty wide because the tires stick so far out.
11. There may be an exhaust leak, either that or its oil that is leaking onto the exhaust and its smoking.
12. The housing around the steering wheel is cracked and rattles around a lot. I don't know what needs to be replaced but I'm tempted to replace the whole steering column. Also the blinker lever/windshield wiper controls are missing and have been replaced with a screwdriver. It works but falls out occasionally (especially during a DW).
13. I currently have no sound system. Or anything. I am looking for something weatherproof and theft-proof. I understand that is hard to do. But I am looking for ideas.
14. Biggest issue is that when the movers moved us out to hawaii they stole all my tools. I have a new steering damper and valve cover gasket but I cant install them because I don't have any of the tools I need and am still waiting for reimbursement so I can replace them.

I am open to any suggestions. Money is a little tight for now but I would like to make this more of a primary vehicle because I am tired of running up milage on my wife's lease.

You could fix the fender flares the cheap way that is pretty common out here.
Go to your local home supply store pick up some garden edging and just bolt it to the flares you have now.

For everything else I might be able to help you out and if not I have a real good hookup for a cheap but damn good mechanic.

I am guessing selling the wife and keeping the jeep would not be an option?

As for the oil, you have 4.2 they leak, does it have a plastic valve cover or metal aftermarket? The metal one's help a great deal but you have to drill and tap. IF it is metal, I would remove and put down new rtv high temp sealer on it.

The axle being shifted back, are the springs bent? And signs the frame is bent? Check the trac-bar as well, go;s from the axle to the frame.(could also be source of dw) That's all I got for this early.. keep us posted.

From the way you explained it and from what your pictures show, my guess is that your jeep has been in a pretty serious accident. The fact that your axel is off-center as much as it is, is most definately the cause of your death-wobble, also in the pictures that you have showing the difference on each side you can see that your spring ends are bent down these will need to be replaced. I just replaced the front springs on mine myself and it cost me around $200 in parts.

Quite honestly this may not be worth it for you to spend the money on fixing up especially if you need to watch your money. Getting that front axel fixed is going to cost quite abit depending on how much damage has been done to the frame and/or mounts and that is just one of the many things that you will need to fix before you could consider this thing safe to drive.

I'd say you have a pretty smart wife!
That is definately a project for someone who has...
1. Lots of free time and money.
2. Lots of mechanical no wait magical abilities.
3. Single with lots of time and money and friends with magical mechanical ability.

Theres only one way to tackle a project like this...fix anything that needs to be fixed to make it safe to drive first. Then prioritize what needs fixing that will prevent further damage to other parts or pieces.

I reallydont think you should be making that your primary vehicle. Not being on the mainland, your access to parts and supplies is going to be more difficult and more expensive.

Those springs look bent at the rear mount. I'd start there if the frame is straight and solid. That should re-center the axle and cut down on the DW and leaning.

The key-like rattling is probably those swaybar quick disconnects that look like they have no bushings in them.

Ok try to hit these all in one.

Spent $2500 on it. I'm driving it about 5 miles a day at sub 35mph. I'm waiting on some money that will buy me time but the military isn't too quick on reimbursement.

It is a plastic cover and I have a new valve cover gasket that will hopefully cut down on the leakage. New cover may come later.

Don't want to admit my wife is right yet…

The jeep may have been in an accident. I probably should have done a Carfax or something on it but I only had 20 minutes to make the decision.

For all those of you with ideas for checking the frame and suspension, thanks. Never done any work on suspension before, most of my experience was with engines between '87-'92 but I've never had anything lifted or 4x4 and being from southern california rust wasn't nearly the issue it is here.

I do have a lot of experience working on cars and am pretty handy, I have buddies that are willing to help me work on it and have access to car shops on base that have lifts and everything I need to work on the suspension. Time also isn't a huge issue. The two biggest time consuming issues are work and the beach, so I could take time off from either and get stuff done.

I know parts are going to be hard to find and I don't know if I can try parting out another jeep, or is that a bad idea? Is it a bad idea to salvage parts for suspension?

I will let you all know as I start getting stuff done and hopefully I will have tools on Wednesday so I can start working on it.

Appreciate the input.

Check on the North Shore there used to be a guy down there that had his own Jeep graveyard. The only info I remember about him is he lives in Waialua and his name is Lawrence if you talk to enough guys someone should know how to get ahold of him.

My dude, the thing that looks good on your jeep is the floor pedals. Nice. As for everything else, i'd get a girl friend that likes it. Then you'll still be happy about the purchase. As for the fixes, yeah, parting out is a great option for sure.

Group called M.I.D. out of Salinas, CA. You would think that the contractors the government uses to move military personal wouldn't do stuff like that right? I wouldn't say a majority but probably 1 in 3 people I know out here had stuff broken or stolen. Maybe more.

I do have a question. Going to sound ignorant but I don't know the technical terms. Can the axel slide back on the springs. Front driver side axel looks like it has slid 3-4" back. It looks like it was sitting farther up. I'll post pictures later but I don't know if that is even possible.3

Ok. I finally got some tools and can get to working on it. Also I grabbed a buddy who has had more experience with suspension problems. We both agree that it does not look like the jeep was in an accident. There does not appear to be any frame damage also the body and the rest of the suspension shows no signs of a collision. But it does look like the axle has slid back a bit on the leaf springs. Has anyone ever heard of this happening. Looks like it could have happened if you hit a rock or something and the U-bolts were not tight enough. Also any ideas on how to fix it. I though about putting it up on a high jack loosening the U-bolts and trying to hammer the axle back to where it goes.

That's a possibility... those front springs really should be replaced though, with the ends bent back the way that they are, it's only a matter of time before they fail. Also replacing the springs will make it easier to see exactly what's wrong with the front axel and fix it. If the axel did slide back on the springs then chances are the springs or the spring perch may be damaged. There is a nub on the spring that the perch sits in to keep the axel in place.

I was stationed out in Monterey, CA last year. My buddies had alot of issues shipping stuff from DLI to where we are now. Shady company and the military doesnt do shit about it. :banghead:

It's possible for the center pin to have broke on your leaf spring, allowing the axle to shift. I would check that out and replace both front springs if not them all

thanks bud now I dont feel sooo bad about all the issues with my 89 that the BF hates. at least maybe your 4x4 works the vacuum system on mine is fried I think. Good luck keep us posted and found out on a different thread cavalier seats will fit in it with out any mods, just a fyi on that ha ha

Nah his swaybar bushings are shot which is probably due to this axel being off center.
