Moving to Indy

I'm pretty excited about moving from Alaska to Indy in May '11. If anyone is willing please post up the areas of Indy to avoid living in. I am self employed so no real commuting concerns, my company is buying a house here to act as an office/home
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rl...-8&sa=N&tab=wl

My biggest concerns are the quality of elementary schooling and the crime......gotta protect my 2 babies (daughter&TJ:)

Any other advice ya'll care to share about the area? I was born/raised in Missouri , I am expecting life to be about the same....

Welcome to the Hoosier state:wavey: Being from down south I'm not going to be of any assistance with your questions, but there are a bunch of guys here from Indy so I'm sure they'll help. I know Avon and Carmel are nice areas, as are Greenwood and Mooresville..

Hope the move goes well, welcome. I live in Hendricks county which is about dead center of the state. It's a nice county. There are a lot of good schools in the area, crime rate is low and there are all ranges in housing.

Thanks everyone, its nice to hear good things. I was worried, I have grown to love the Alaska scenery and laid back way of life.

Having lived in Missouri, and having relatives there, Indy will be a little faster paced, if you are looking for it. IG was correct in the areas she named, I myself would prefer Avon or Fishers. Fishers is on north side closer to MI about 3 hours. Avon is closer to badlands and IL. They are almost an hour apart. Indy is very "sprawling" these days. Avon is also closer to Airport.

I'm originally from greencastle in putnam county. It's a nice small town. Good schools. Low crime. Good, friedly people. And most importantly my favorite mud hole. Good luck with your move and welcome 2 Indy!

I am in Boone County which is Northwest of Indianapolis and very close to the Badlands ORV park! Beyond that, there are plenty of nice places and if commuting is not a factor you can find someplace sort of laid back and quiet like you're used to. From the map point you provided, you could go just a few miles east and be in farmland area. There's also a 4WheelParts store right around the corner from there if you're the type to buy retail for your offroad vehicle.

I have lived in the Broadripple Area for several years, and I would have recommended it several years ago too. Unfortunately it's just not quite the place it used to be. Carmel is a pretty nice place but it's very posh and expensive. I'm not real familiar with avon but I've heard good things and my dad lived out there when I was young and loved it. I currently work at the franklin fire department which is just a little south of Greenwood which is where I would recommend. Greenwood is a really nice and growing community. If I ever get tired of the city I think that's where I'll go!

I forgot about this thread....thanks for all the advice about indy. I think we are going to buy a different house but probably still near Lawrence. I know it can be hit or miss around there as far as crime goes. T minus 6 months!

Where you located on the map is a rough(er) part of town. I've lived on the southwest side of Indianapolis my entire life. In between Mooresville and Greenwood, its a nice scenic area (woods all around me) but also only 5-10 mins from food and stores, and 20 mins from downtown Indy. Great for the fireworks and many fun events downtown.

I've PM'ed you let me know if you eve want to meet up or need to know anything. I know the city like the back of my hand its nice to live in but to be away from the hussle and bussle, which I would suggest living outside of 465, really its a dividing line mostly for the crime and dirtiness I guess you would say. I live out in the suburbs in a mid income neighborhood (90-120k's) Its nice we have great neighbors and its calm and very low on crime. Greenwood and Avon and Plainfield are the big building up towns around Indy. They are linked with major roads that can get you into the city quickly and they are great options with great schools. North side is high income housing but great schools and low crime. The west side and east side once you pass 465 they become more rural quickly but are nice and quaint towns with solid school districts and low crime, such as Danville, Brownsburg and Greenfield, New Pal and Mccordsville. Then you have Geist... If you are rich you live there. Peyton Manning has a house there.. :punk:

You'll love the city once you get to know its inner workings and how to get around and all the hidden gems. You'll love the layout and style of downtown and the award winning museums and theatres. Its a gem of a city with the colts, pacers, a great farm team baseball club the Indian's and the gardens and the canal. I could go on forever. Then you have the many 300+ events at the fairgrounds, and the big shows at the convention center. And we have great radio stations ;)

Just watch the inner city areas surrounding downtown directly. They are pretty rough, east side being the main one. Which I'd say 85% of crime happens there according to the news.

Cheers! :D (I helped my friend from California adjust here, and he loves it!

I agree with IndyJeepMan....Greenwood, Mooresville and parts in between are for the most part nice. I'm kind of prejudgidiced. I grew up in Greenwood and still love the area.

but no matter where you land, there will be some not so nice areas, so just drive through the neighborhoods and see what you think.

best of luck with the move! :thumb:

Two other good towns not mentioned yet are danville and plainfield. Both can be tucked away but at the same time easy to access anything you need. Best of luck with the move and as others have said if u need anything holler and well help ya out

Thx for all the replies! I've been busy starting a business and haven't had much time for JF lately. The moving date approaches, we should finalize our housing plans soon. We will most likely move into one of our investment properties....I will post up the area soon.

Holy Cow I drove 4200 miles over 7 days, 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT pulling my Jeep and trailer, 1000 lbs of household goods, 2 Adults, 1 child, and 2 guinea pigs. I drove through 7 States, 3 Canadian provinces, 5 time zones, 2 of North Americas highest mountain ranges, and 9.8 avg mpg over 4251 miles. I spent roughly $2250 on gas, cheapest $3.65 Algona, IA highest $1.79 CDN/L or roughly $7.16 Gal Munsen Lake, BC. I'm now in Indianapolis :)

Oh and I saw black bear, Dahl sheep, moose, elk, caribou, and wild horses eating the green grass near or on the highway!

bkelly911 06-06-2011 10:16 AM

So what part of town did you end up in?

JeremyW 07-23-2011 06:37 AM

I've been working so hard I forgot about WF! I gotta stop that. I live near Crown Hill Cemetery, 42/Michigan area temporarily. I am rehabbing my house near 21st & Cumberland, should be moving in a month.
