for those of you who like the plate mounted on top of the tire just drill 3 holes in the license plate to match up to the stock tire carrier mount. most of us are aware of the consequences of running the spare on the tail gate. you already have three pre-drilled holes so you might as well use em for something.

im a fan of the tire carriers that have the option to mount the plate on the tire. this is kinda the same look just minus a couple of things. its just to tide me over until i get the funds for the tire carrier.

Nice but yeah I doubt there are any states that don't require a license plate light. I guess you probably already have plans to mount a light somehow.

this is what i found. i didnt see anything about a light on the back plate.

Attachment of plates to vehicles Violations enumerated. (Effective until July 1, 2011.)

The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times. However, if only one license number plate is legally issued for any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of such vehicle. Each vehicle license number plate shall be placed or hung in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground and shall be kept clean so as to be plainly seen and read at all times. In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol. It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle or to display upon any vehicle any vehicle license number plate or plates which have been in any manner changed, altered, disfigured or have become illegible. License plate frames may be used on vehicle license number plates only if the frames do not obscure license tabs or identifying letters or numbers on the plates and the plates can be plainly seen and read at all times. It is unlawful to use any holders, frames, or any materials that in any manner change, alter, or make the vehicle license number plates illegible. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle unless there shall be displayed thereon valid vehicle license number plates attached as herein provided.

Where they got you is "can be plainly seen and read at all times" which means it'd need a light at night. Ya can't plainly see and read a license plate at night in the dark. :)

Just like the white "back up" lights, they are not required.

Also I would suggest getting a spare. This past weekend I got a flat on the freeway going about 65. I was about 30 miles from home and 10 mins late to a soccer game. Thankfully I had my spare and changed it like that! It's never fun being broke down on the side of the road as cars pass by 70+ mph.

If you plan on keeping it there for any mount of time, a great option for lighting is the litebolts (or light bolts) that motorcycles use. it has a small LED in the head of the "bolt". and shines down on to the plate.

Backup lights are not required but I'd sure like to have proof that any state in the U.S. does not require the license plate be lit up/readable at night.

i carry the spare in the back of the jeep. ive got a socket wrench set covering it up in the picture.

Lite'N Boltz work great, that's what I light my license plate up with. They are license plate bolts with tiny LED lights inside.

Doesn't drilling holes change, alter or disfigure in some way, technically? :bottom: if you get a cop on a bad day or has a license plate pet peeve it's legally a reason to stop you. Just playing devil's advocate here :firedevil:, i'm a deputy and have learned to pick apart laws. The "or" part in what i left doesn't mean that the change "has to make it illegible." I wouldn't stop anyone for this though. At least you have your tag on the vehicle. I just use license plate infractions for vehicles leaving known drug areas or reasons to check out other peoples rigs.... j/k :wavey:

where did you wire yours in at jerry? im thinking about drilling all the way through the the tailgate and wiring it to the third brake light setup since i dont have the third brake light anymore.

I wired mine into the tail light wiring since my license plate is still near where there the factory installed. You could use the 3rd brake light wiring for your center-mounted plate after reconnecting it inside the corner of the tub so it connects to the tail light and not the stop light wiring.

well in the process of trying to find those led lights i got a call from the boss man in michigan and sounds like i got some work for awhile. so i kinda dropped the idea cause the first thing im getting is the or fab tire carrier:D

The factory tail gate isn't really up to holding a spare bigger than about 32". Any bigger than that and it's a crap-shoot on how long before the mounting bracket fails. Mine cracked something like 6 months after mounting a 33x12.50 on an aluminum wheel onto it.

Thanks, Jerry. Does that count for road driving or just those who off-road with the spare on the back?

When I get my Smittybuilt roofrack from Amazon here in the next couple of days I'll be sure to slap my spare on top, at least when off-roading. I'm only running 31s but if you guys think it's risky I'll keep it up top.

We have to have lights here, but if you have an 18K or larger you only get one plate and it goes on the front...no light needed

For a 31", the factory spare tire carrier is fine. I would not place the spare on top, doing so just unnecessarily raises your COG (center of gravity) as well as increases the wind resistance. And on a very steep or off-camber trail, having that extra weight on top could be the deciding factor on tipping or rolling over.
