Charging problems - What's mine?

Ok, my battery goes dead while driving or sitting. If I hook it up to a battery charger, the battery will charge enough to start the engine.

That all seems to point to the alternator buuuut, my gauge says the alternator is providing about 14 volts.

I was thinking this could be due to a bad connection between the alternator and the battery. Possibly a fuse?

Since my gauge still indicates that the alternator is working, what's the most likely source of my problem?

Also, my jeep has been sitting for year with this battery so I would suspect a bad battery as well buuuuut, when I plug it into a charger, it charges. So shouldn't the alternator charge it too?

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help.

Just cause it charges doesn't mean it will hold a charge. You need to test it under load, but in any event, the Jeep runs on the alternator when running. Check all connections including battery for corrosion and tightness.

remove ALL ground wires. sand the contact area to bare metal. clean terminals. use new nuts and washers and reattach grounds. all ground wires does noe mean the whole jeep. just the ones on the engine and engine compartment firewall. remember that dissimilar metals will cause corrosion.

I forgot to mention that I already cleaned the connection at the battery and tightened the terminals. I'll take the battery out tonight and have it checked at AutoZone. I have a feeling your right about testing it under load.

Thanks

Navy, I'll try cleaning and tightening the ground connections to the starter and alternator tonight. That sounds like a good idea.

Battery is probably weak. I had one in a vehicle that would start the vehicle when ambient temperature. Let it get hot, it would act like a dead battery.

It would charge up and hold it, start the vehicle fine. One it got hot, all bet's were off.

did you check the fluid level in the battery?

The battery was way low. I filled it up with regular tap water and charged it over night but it didn't seem to help.

Auto batteries aren't made to sit that long unless they're being charged in some fashion. I bet you have a bad battery. I would just replace it, better than getting stuck.

Bought a new battery. Problem solved. Sometimes I complicate things by analyzing every symptom to diagnose a problem.

Thanks for your help everyone.
