Savvy or Poison Spyder full corner armor...?

Hey guys this october im gonna pull the trigger on either Savvy or PSC full corner armor. If i get the PSC i will get the aluminum armor, but it is $50 more than the Savvy aluminum armor. Whats your experiences with both, pics are welcome. I know both are excellent products.

Poison Spyder Crusher corners, get them now and you get a free windshield decal and a tramp stamp.

what did you paint yours with? Since im getting the aluminum i might leave it bare, but IDK

Jerry Bransford 09-27-2010 07:20 PM

Savvy. I'm on my second TJ with Savvy corners and they are a great design. Lightweight (6061 T-6 aircraft aluminum), strong as hell, and fit perfectly. I prefer the natural aluminum finish I had on my first set (that TJ was stolen) to the black anodized finish that was on my second set when I bought the Jeep with the Savvy corners already installed. Not to mention you can later add Savvy's top stainless-steel rub rail that is ideal for those giant rocks that like to take out the rear of the tub. :D

If it's a toss-up quality wise, compare the shipping and if there's any taxes.

jforse 09-27-2010 08:26 PM

Savvy hands down!

^^^ is yours the natural finish? it looks duller or something. i can get the PSC (alluminum) for $370 shipped and that comes with a free tramp stamp aswell. But then again if i go savvy $300 for the corners and if i wanted the tramp stamp aswell it would be $360+ shipping. Anyone have a idea on shipping to ohio? I really like both, keep the pics coming

I would get steel over aluminum of the same thickness any day of the week. 3/16" aluminum is WAY weaker than 3/16" steel. Remember that aluminum is stronger than steel only by weight, not thickness. Poison Spyder makes the best products.

Jerry Bransford 09-28-2010 12:54 PM

Aluminum corner guards are way stronger than is needed. The reduced weight of the aluminum is the key benefit since the aluminum guards are, again, much stronger than is needed. Steel is NOT needed for the corners and I would defy anyone to dent Savvy's or Poison Spyder's aluminum corners even out in Johnson Valley. And those of us with actual experience in the products know that the aluminum withstands even the severest impacts out in Johnson Valley. That is my PERSONAL experience.

Only the clueless would push heavier steel for such applications.

Not necessarily true there are many grades of AL I will put my Savvy GTS skid up against any steel skid you want and keep up. And at half the weight to boot. If you want to load down your rig with unneeded weight feel free, but there are better ways now.

Ibuildembig 09-28-2010 01:09 PM

Hell I dunno why anyone even buys armor :P....seems most jeepers don't care about looks anyway, why would dents be any different lol Its not like the resale will be any better, I see corner guards on um I immediately think rust cover up.

Jeepzcb09 09-28-2010 01:38 PM

^^ I see your point, but if your like me and your building your rig to keep for a really long time, i want to keep the body intact, and not to metion it looks good

Jerry Bransford 09-28-2010 01:41 PM

Not to mention that aluminum corners can prevent caving in a rear corner if you slide back down backwards off an obstacle and into a rock, tree, etc.. They are definitely stronger than the factory tub corners. That there are gas hose connections and on newer Jeeps the evaporative system inside the rear corners is a good reason to not want to cave in either corner.

Plus quarter planels are expensive as hell to replace if you can't weld!

Ok, so what grade of aluminum is stronger than steel for the same thickness?:banghead:

I always laugh when i see corner guards on jeeps without a single scratch on them.

DevilDogDoc 09-28-2010 03:11 PM

Who cares about the thickness? Even if thicker it's still lighter so who cares?

Jerry Bransford 09-28-2010 03:18 PM

Jgorm better get rid of his aluminum wheels, plastic fender flares, vinyl top, etc. if he thinks steel is better for everything. According to his theories on aluminum, his aluminum wheels aren't going to hold up to offroading apparently so he better swap them out for steel wheels right away before they dent or bend.

Ultimate tensile strength of 1018 Mild (low-carbon) steel: 63.8ksi
Ultimate tensile strength of 7075-T6 Aluminum: 83ksi

You left that wide open :flipoff:

That said, in general (and dealing with good steel alloys), steel will be stronger than aluminum. :p But as was brought up earlier, you have to decide what is enough, and what is overkill.

Jeepzcb09 09-28-2010 04:03 PM

I like this debate lol

Jerry Bransford 09-28-2010 04:11 PM

What's funny is Jgorm doesn't even have a dog in this fight. His Jeep doesn't have any type of aftermarket corners on his Jeep, steel or aluminum, and never has. He has zero personal experience with steel or aluminum aftermarket corners. I've owned both and removed my old steel corner guards to go with aluminum.

Jeepzcb09 09-28-2010 04:27 PM

go easy on him Jerry he has 23 posts lol.

Does Reynolds make corner armor :D?

Cons Table :stick to your LCOG crap lol.... also looking at your profile your running a 2.5in SL with a 1.25in BL, thats only 1/4in lower than a 4in lift which is not considered to be a "LCOG" build. Most LCOG rigs are 2-3 in lifts. Im so tired of hearing that shit haha

Is heavy duty reynolds acceptable?

30-284 09-28-2010 07:27 PM

I'm sure it is but I think it's for the more hardcore rockcrawlers tho.:)
