Check your drivers side front brake line
 
I recently went for an oil change at the dealer with my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 4 door. The dealership informed me that me front drivers side tire is rubbing through me brake line when I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. If you turn your wheel all the way to the right you can look in the wheel well and see where it is rubbing through. I will admit that I am not a mechanic and I know very little about cars. I asked the dealership that since I have not modified my Jeep if the repair would be covered. They told me no, but said they would cover it through my extended warranty and I would just have to pay the $100 deductible. I did not like the answer so I called Chrysler directly and told them about my problem. They said that they would not fix the problem free of charge even though it is not my fault. I checked a few other people's 4 door jeeps and they are having the same problem. Obviously the brake line is installed from the factory in a place where it rubs. This is not the same issue as the brake recall that jeep has already put out. After speaking with Chrysler I called the NHTS and lodged a complaint against Chrysler for installing the brake line in an area that it rubs against the tire.

Since many people here know more about cars then I do, please tell me if my thinking is wrong. If the stock tire rubs through the stock brake line on a stock vehicle, shouldn't it be replaced for free?
Also, please check your front drivers side brake line to make sure you don't have this problem.

There is a recall out for exactly that issue. All you need to do is trim the inner plastic fender well.

The current recall is for the fender lining rubbing through the brake line, and that is not my problem. My tire is rubbing through my brake line.

It is probably out of it's normal warranty so that makes it a tough call.

Then you obviously don't have stock tires. What size are they?

I ordered the jeep brand new and have not altered anything including the tires. My tires are the original optional ones that came with the jeep. P255/70r18

It makes absolutely no sense that your tire is contacting your brake line. Can you post pictures to show where it is rubbing?

Thanks for sharing this. I'll look at mine tomorrow morning but as of the time I bought it, the dealer ran the VIN number on my Jeep and said that mine was not listed in the recall so I haven't looked into it any further. Got me thinking...

Good for you! I think you did the right thing. Chrysler sounds like apple, they won't admit their f*** ups. that's their own mistake and should be covered. Well, with the recall that is.

I still don't see how your tire is rubbing there. If it is then it's about to fall off.

it only rubs when the wheel is turned all the way to the left like pulling in and out of parking spaces.

OK, now that I have a better understanding I re-read your original post. It is a warranty type issue. Since your regular warranty is up and you have an extended warranty it will be covered by that with your $100 deductible. They shouldn't have to fix it for free. It is not a design defect that is affecting all Wranglers, it's just something wrong with yours.

If it was just my wrangler I would agree with you but I have checked 2 other 4 door sahara wranglers and they both have the same problem. Which is why I posted it here so that people will check their brake lines.

I had the front tires off of my wife's 2007 last night and discovered this same problem on both sides. I'm going to my local dealer now to see about a fix.

I believe that your front axle is not ok.
A friend of mine had a similar problem under warranty and after checking his front dana with a third party geometry expert it was revealed that his front axle had on the right end a deformation from its birth so to say. Dealer replaced its front axle entirely amd since then no rubber amy more.

To note I believe the $100 deductable you only have to pay once. I also have an extended service contract and was told that I would only have to pay the deductable once and from there one anything covered would be taken care of at no additional cost. I realize you dont want to spend the $100 but I would bet you are going to have too sooner or later, might as well get it out of the way. I've already paid mine.

Same issue here...when I got oil change, I figured this was the k13 recall because it does not look normal..after having recall done at dealership, found out this is different non recall problem...BS!!!!!! Oh and during k13 fix, service guy said that my "ball joints have a lot of play on them"...I almost smacked him

I wonder if the OP (or others) found the resolution to this. I happened to be checking under the Jeep as part of routine maintenance and noticed what I thought was rubbing in this location, but couldn't be sure.

Subsequent checks seem to reveal that, under hard left tuns, my driver's front tire makes contact with the foam/rubber collar which is zip-tied to the brake line.

I've got stock-sized tires (255/75R17 Firestone Destination AT) and no suspension modifications.

Not sure if it's related, but I've also noticed a steering wheel wobble under sharp turns... similar to when turning in 4WD, but not nearly as severe. I'm thinking a u-joint or ball joint, but I'm not sure. Either way, I'm calling a garage this week to have both issues looked into, but I'd love to know if there is a known cause and/or solution to the brake line rubbing.

You pay the deductible every time you being it in for repairs, not once.

Is it just just my perception or do the side walls on the pictured tires appear to be bulging out against the brake line? Does he have the tire aired down causing the tire to rub? If that is the case then it would not be the manufactures responsibility to fix... Those are after market tires. Just get spacers on the tires or add more air if need...

Tires don't appear to be bulging. At least not in any major way. This only occurs when turned full lock left.

While I haven't checked the pressure in a few weeks, they are not aired down in any appreciable way. TPMS has not come on, so I don't see that difference being the issue.

I do not expect the dealer to repair... although the factory-applied collar in that spot tells me Mopar knows the clearances are tight. ;)

While technically true, they are the same size specification as what came from the factory and match what is on the door sticker (255/75-17).
