upgrades for $100 or less.........

What are some significant upgrades that would cost less than $100? Upgrades that someone will a little mechanical skills could do. Might even involve some welding or fabricating.

nicolas-eric 03-05-2007 07:30 PM

what kind of upgrade do you mean?

something that improves the offroad capabilities?
or something that makes the jeep look better?
car-radio and sound improvement?

what things do you already have in your jeep? pics...?

suspension, performance, lift, etc.,

amerijeep 03-05-2007 10:35 PM

Good luck. I can hardly change all my fluids, plugs and wires for that.

So this is a rich mans game?

BigMike 03-06-2007 07:39 AM

Maybe some greasable shackles....

Iquois 03-06-2007 07:46 AM

ok......are there any fairly cheap do it yourself tips/tricks that a weekend mechanic could do? Or does everything cost an arm and a leg?

daddyjeep 03-06-2007 11:25 AM

You are only limited by your imagination. You can fab up some bumpers and rocker panels. Maybe work on a roll cage. As far as suspension, you are going to spend some money to do things correctly. Even with a shackle lift you will need new shocks, which puts you way ovet the $100 mark. You could always put that $100 away until you can find it some friends and get yourself a good lift.

Sort of. A fool and his money are soon parted, they say. My jeep is mostly stock because I don't like to part with my money. Everything is expensive when it comes to jeep upgrades and it is true that it takes a load of cash to keep perform routine maintenance.

disclaimer: I am not callin' anyone a fool. If you are offended, then you spend more money than you can afford.

cb11 03-06-2007 07:56 PM

What about SOA?

I did a spring over on my Sammy for $0

Cut the perches off with a cut off wheel and welded them back on top, cut and lengthened the steering linkage, etc. I rode it and wheel'd it like that for a few weeks before adding shocks, driveshaft spacers, bigger motor, rebuilt tranny,.....

Point is, once you start moddin' it, you're gonna spend more $ than you ever intended to.

Nah, just take your sway bars and trac bar and throw them in the trash. or sell them for scrap and actually make money improving your off road performance.

Jeepin1023 03-07-2007 08:46 PM

You want to blow some money??? Get yourself a 4-wheel drive hardware catalog or Quadratec catalog. Then start flipping through it and see how many pages you have dog-eared. I started out light and now look at me....wanting to do full width axles and play on some real rocks out @ Moab. Once you start, you can't stop!!!! Good luck!!

AzTJ 03-08-2007 12:15 AM

You drive a TJ BigJeep. Throwing away your sway bars might be a problem. Us YJ guys can't tell they are gone. I think DC just put them on there so they could say that the Jeeps were less likely to roll over on the street. They have been building leaf sprung vehicles for years without the need for sway bars.

Do not get rope for recovery, get a Recovery strap.
This is what can happen if you use rope: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7/CIMG0714.jpg

I'd get a bodylift.

Or if you have a welder you can buy metal make a custom bumper or sliders, etc...

removing the swaybars on a TJ makes the on road handling very bad. on a YJ it´s only a very small effect. you can also removethe track bar. with leaf springs you don´t need it.
