transmission probs

Hey guys,

I have a 91 wrangler and the past week whenever I try to put it in 2nd or 3rd rear it fights going in. It grinds and makes a screeching sound then after 2 or 3 tries it goes in.

What could be going on here?

it only happens with 2nd or 3rd gear.

The synchros could be shot mabey time for a rebuild.. How many miles?

well guys sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.

I am still having the transmission probs as second and third gear seem almost impossible to get into gear, even double clutching.

I am beting I need the tranny rebuilt, EXPLETIVE!
That is super expensive so I am planning on selling my hard top to pay for it.

what do you guys think a 91 hardtop in good condition could go for??

I am also having a problem with my gas tank now, for some reason it will only let me put in 12 dollars workth of gas and will not let me fill any further, any idea what this is??

I am really bumbed and do not want to sell my jeep, I love the thing!

Hopefully I can get this tranny and gas tank prob solved in the least expensive way,

any idea where I can get a cheap transmission?

I'm new to Jeeps, but have 30+ years of mechanic experience. It's definitely the sycro's and if you keep grinding the gears to shift you will destroy them as well. I would have a free estimate done at a local reputable tranny shop.

what is the process in repairing the synchros?

that looks like a pretty good deal. u have the 4cyl?

That transmission looks like a good deal. The only thing that I would be leary of is that you can't actually see it in person before you buy it. I just paid 400 dollars for a used tranny last year from a local guy, so the price is good.

If you decide to sell your hard top, let me know how much you want for it and I may buy it. I have been looking for one but have not yet found a good deal.

A person from another forum had similar gas filling problem (not a wrangler though). It would only fill up so much and then it would stop and then if you try to fill up again later it would work again. It turned out that the car had a wire mesh right after the fill tube or something there that was cloged so it would fill up the tube and then it will take a while to drown in the tank. I also say the syncros but i dont know how to change them.

that tranny is not going to work, I need the AX15 as I have a straight 6 with a 4.0.

any deals on one of these anyone know of?

91 wrangler with the slave cylinder inside.

I on the other hand love messing with small pins and stuf as long as i know where they go lol :) I would ask for a quote at tranny shop and see how much you will need first and then sell the top. Unless i never use it i wouldnt sell it.

To repair the sycro's you would have to drop the tranny and transfer case, disconnect the transfer case from the tranny and completely disassemble the tranny. A tranny rebuild kit with new sycro plates is only about $200.00, so if you have the mechanical applitude you can save big bucks. If you've never been into a tranny or don't have mechanic experience I don't recommend it.
