How to reset the Rubicon Speed Limiter...?

hi,

a friend wants to use his TJ rubicon on competitions and trophys. for that he wants to reset the stock speed limiter. he wants to go faster than the about 90 mph in the desert.

do you know how he can reset this limiter...?

Thanks in advance.

nicolas-eric :)

Most aftermarket "chips" such as Edge and Hypertech will allow you to adjust the rev limiter and top speed.

thanks. do you have a link where i can read more about these chips or where i can buy them...?

Rawkon 03-09-2007 04:21 PM

theres a reason why no one uses a TJ for high speed wheeling.
going 90mph in the desert is a death wish. in my opinion. a XJ is a better choice

You can find more at http://www.hypertech.com. I thought that the Edge module was programable as well, but it doesn't look like it. You can get more information on http://www.quadratec.com.

Tell your friend that the Rubicon's wheelbase is way too short for that application. 90+ mph on the desert in a Rubicon or Wrangler is a death wish. That your friend wants to do that is a clear sign that he hasn't researched the Rubicon's suitability for that particular sport. Kind of like buying a crop duster for pylon racing.

Rawkon 03-09-2007 06:09 PM

bahahahahahaha crop duster

tooo funny jerry. i dont even like getting my tj up to 80 on the freeway let alone in the desert. going 40mph is fast in the desert. tell him to acomplish that first. :D

AzTJ 03-09-2007 10:28 PM

Unless its a Rubicon Unlimted :p

Triple88a 03-09-2007 10:41 PM

put a gear on the speedo that is made for 17s when u got 33s? so that should make the computer read that ur going 180 or so to limit it?

RedRubiTJ 03-09-2007 11:35 PM

The rubicon doesn't have a speedo gear. It's e-tronic. POS :D.

Triple88a 03-09-2007 11:44 PM

oh well first thing is i wouldnt spend 20some grand on a rubi and take it in the desert with +90 :) Good luck though I rather find one of those sand buggies and race that there.

Rawkon 03-10-2007 12:48 AM

post pics i wanna see the baja jeep

nicolas-eric 03-10-2007 07:39 AM

it´s a rubicon unlimited

before he had a 1.3 meters stretched TJ with a 5.9 V8 that was +140 mph fast.
at the moment he adds a compressor to his rubicon unlimited. he´ll have about 300 HP after that. and he wants to be able to go faster than the slow 90 mph.

Rawkon 03-10-2007 11:09 AM

quick wheres the BS flag????

Have you been in or seen any the TJ or LJ. adding a blower to a 4.0 wont give it 300 hp

90mph isnt slow in a jeep its actually pretty unstable and not safe.

dont get me wrong im not calling you a liar but your buddy im thinking is lieing to you

the i6 is already stroked and the compressor will bring about +80-100 HP.

take a look at this diagram. it´s from a stock 4.0L with this compressor. the upper line is the torque (newton-meters), the lower line the HP (kilowatts):

but all your comments did not tell me how to reset the speed limiter.

I will have to completely disagree with you man, sorry. Adding a blower doesnt mean only 5lb that is available on the net that only gives u 280 or so. There are many many many.. blowers out there that can pump out over 30lb of boost. Do you have any idea how much hp ur tj will have with 30lb of boost? Of my head i will say +1500hp (with this kind of boost you will have to replace the internals but thats another story). My first car that was a miata 1.8 that can get 300hp at around 13lb of boost (stock internals still holding). I dont know how strong TJ's internals are but with 6-7 lb of boost it should be able to break the 300 mark easily since its a 4.0. If he wants to go deeper he can replace the internals with forged ones or perhaps a stroker kit and can boost it more than 12lb to reach the +500s. Again dont forget you will need much bigger fuel tank to make up for the hp unless the stages are really short but from what i've seen they are preatty long.

Rawkon 03-10-2007 11:47 AM

Good luck

they already told you how to get rid of the limiter. go buy a hypertec programmer

Absolute Offroad 03-10-2007 10:47 PM

Sounds like your buddy has m oney to waste, so really the best way to do it is with a Superlift "tru-speed" box. It will fool the computer and its adjustable. The hypertech will change the limiter to 119 MPH. Now, It sounds like your buddy must know wiring, since he's adding a blower to a OBD 2 equipped vehicle, so tell him to check the wires at the "grey" connector on the pcm. I wont go into detail, but if he does some research, there is a wire there that feeds the speed signal to the PCM and it can be disabled fully. But, damn, Does he have a death wish???:D

every stock TJ here in europe can go about 115 mph. i don´t know why the rubicon is limited.

my buddy drives rallys and other high-speed offroad competitions for over 10 years. most of the time with toyotas and landrovers. now he wants to do the same with a rubicon unlimited.
the company that adds the blower offers that as a full package. it comes with all parts and installation parts and adds to the power of a stock 4.0 engine some additional 100 HP. i don't know how much my buddy will have when he is ready. he still has a 4.7L stroker with about 270 HP.

Dare2BSquare 03-10-2007 11:10 PM

The speed limiter on my yj is that it is shaped like a box and has a 4banger...

Odd is he 03-11-2007 09:53 AM

Anything over 75 in a jeep gets really sketchy.....

Unless your in this

navy-jeepster 03-11-2007 10:53 AM

Can the owners of the message board be added as the receipient of his life insurance if he dies at over 90mph on the desert with his TJ. That way when he does bite it, the life insurance can go to pay for this forum for many years to come.

Triple88a 03-11-2007 02:07 PM

Odd is he hopefully he doesnt use it to tow the trailer :)

nicolas-eric 03-11-2007 02:11 PM

he only uses it as a sports utility for competitions/rallys. it will be traiilered there or send there in a container by ship.
for the street he has another TJ.

jp'rs_peep'rs 03-11-2007 08:18 PM

Anything is possible. May be not always pluasible. I say damn the torpedos and fall steam ahead. What ever your friend enjoys bless his heart. Because at 115mph a preist is just about what will be needed. Ive done 120mph in a 1970 metal sled and 1962 Desota at about 130mph with a hemi 383 and 4-6 pkg. on the top and it was scary as hell.

120 mph isn´t fast for a perfect balancedout rubicon unlimited i think.
i go 110 mph on the highway very often with my TJ (4" lift, 32s tires) without any problems.

i think you all have problems with very high speeds over there.
p.e. i drive about 170 mph more than twice a week with my little alpina biturbo. with myfathers s600l mercedes i also drive 170-180 mph very often.
here in germany the average speed of all cars on the highway is about 90-100 mph. we like to go fast over here and as long we are the only country without speed limits in all europe we will enjoy that as often as possible.

p.s. my personal speed record was about 200 mph with a friends twin-loaded +400 HP hayabusa.

debruins 03-11-2007 08:56 PM

holy smokes i guess your right

my dad gets mad when i go over 80

nicolas-eric 03-11-2007 09:13 PM

one more thing. the last car my buddy used on competitions was a modified landrover defender called "bowler wildcat 200 rallye raid". it has a double-charged 5.0L V8 with about 340 HP. with that car he drove +135 mph in the desert sahara over the dunes last spring. ok because of the bad grip and the spinning wheels in the desert it must have been some real 110-120 mph.

04moneypit 03-11-2007 09:17 PM

You wanna talk fast and scary, it's 180mph in a 69 chevy nova with drum brakes, a fiberglass frontend, 2.73 gears (no I didn't stutter), is it a bad thing when the dotted lines turn into a long solid blur?

wow. in such an old car with drum brakes (!!!) i wouldn´t go that fast. or only if there´s nobody else on a +3-lane highway.
