Winch on stock bumper with no guard?

I'm putting a Warn M8000 on my Jeep in spring. I'm considering saving money by not buying a winch bumper, and just mounting the thing right to a winch plate on my stock bumper. Only problem is I will have to lose my bumper hoop which will leave the winch more vulnerable I guess. Does this seem important enough to worry about? Is this a dumb question? Am I being overly obsessive compulsive again?

Are u worried about the winch not holding or it being exposed to the elements?

Well, to answer both, the winch plate mounts up to the frame...so it wont budge unless you don't install it right.

And if you're worried about it being subjected to nature, get a winch cover. Some even come with them.

Neither of those really. I know the plate and winch mount to the frame, and rust happens no matter what. I'm more thinking about it getting whacked by tree branches and large animals.

Here's a novel idea: don't run into tree branches and large animals! :D

The one time in the past when I had a winch, I mounted it to the stock bumper. I never had any trouble with it despite its lack of added protection:

(Why, oh why did I not remove that winch before selling that Jeep????)

I'd be kinda interested to see how that turn out for you. Ive seen people around where I live that just have the winch with no add protection. I would really say you'd be fine.

I think you'll be fine as well Gus. I was planning on mounting mine on the stock bumper until I had an accident a few weeks ago that ruined the front bumper. Now I'll mount it on a Highrock 4x4 bumper. (When I can afford to buy one, that is.)

Yeah, I think that's the way I'm going to go for now at least. I can always get another bumper later. I originally got my bumper hoop, which won't work with a winch, to protect the front end somewhat from a deer hit if it happened. Especially around now when the bucks are going crazy running around looking for some nookie. Maybe I can rig something up to my stock bumper for now.

I ran mine on a stock bumper for a few years, no problems at all.
Generally any branch that is big enough to damage your winch is going to do even more damage to your grille, hood and windshield as you go "through" it.
No matter what you do they are going to weather some. I repainted mine this past spring, but it was used and starting to rust when I got it.

I wonder if those covers actually help or hurt with rust? Seems like it might trap moisture inside. Probably doesn't matter either way.
