Rust color normal on underside??

I am new to doing any automotive repairs... I can change a tire, add gas, and change windshield wiper blades. In an attempt to be more self-sufficient, I bought a Haynes manual for my Jeep, and plan to do some work myself, beginning with my own oil change.

I crawled under my Jeep today to get my bearings, and noticed that just about everything is covered with rust! everythig from wheel to wheel on the front end has rust (or at least rust-colored something) on it. Is this normal? If not, what can I do? Lubricate the chassis?

Thanks for your help!!

How old is your jeep? I was under my 2000 TJ the other day looking for the steering stop bolt. Front axle, wheel mounts, everything upfront covered in rust. I did not find the bolt I was looking for and if I did would have been afraid of shearing it off. Rear axle not so much rust although lots o rust on the frame rails ans especially gas tank cover. Dealer will grind off the rust and do an undercoating for about $300.

A Haynes manual is almost worthless. There was a guy on here a while back that had a link to FSM's (factory service manuals) Try using search and type in *FSM*.

His name was Atthehop I believe.

Send him a pm with the year of your Jeep and he'll send you a FSM. Be sure to thank him!

And then tell him it was awesome of that Distortedtj guy to give him all of those PURCHASED FSM files.

OP...I could only assume the salt from your area is the cause for the rust.

Thanks distortedtj for indirectly sending me my FSM! :D

I did find a gazillion page manual (ok, 1666 pages) called "TJ Service Manual" that seems pretty detailed.. same thing?

And regarding the rust.. anything I should worry about? I will see about getting it ground off at a Jeep dealer, but will it cause permanent damage?

To answer someone's question, it is a 2003 Jeep that I bought from Carmax in January. From what I could tell, it has lived its entire life in Miami.. so maybe salt air was speeding up the process.

Glad you were able to find who it was that had the link to FSM's. I couldn't remenber.

I found the manual elsewhere.. can't remember off hand, but did a search on google for "2003 jeep wrangler service manual", and I was able to find it for free. :-)

My 1999 has lots of rust.
Sand and clean it all off and use a paint like Rustoleum.

POR 15...from what I've seen, it'll stop rust dead in its tracks and you won't have to worry about it nearly as much in the future.
