Miller Jeep Trail / Hungry Valley Offroading/Camping 12/4/10-12/5/10

Many of our weekends get pretty busy towards the middle and end of December, and this may be the last offroading opportunity this year for many of us, so let's wrap up 2010 with a party that only California Jeepers know how to throw. We'll spend the day on an awesome trail, then setup camp, have dinner and party. The following morning we'll have breakfast, break camp and wheel a bit more before heading back home.

Miller Jeep Trail is rated difficult, but is really moderate for a Jeep. For comparison it's not much more difficult than Last Chance Canyon or Cleghorn, which some of us recently hit. For this trail run, everyone's Jeep needs to have tow points both front and rear. A CB radio is also highly recommended to be able to communicate with the group on the trail. Please bring a bundle of firewood, plenty of water (I recommend at least a gallon per person per day), provisions and food for overnight camping, and a party attitude!

So here's the plan:

Saturday 12/4/2010

Pack a lunch to eat on the trail.

8:00am Gas up and meet for breakfast at Flying J's
42810 Frazier Mountain Rd
Lebec, CA 93243
661-248-2505

9:30am Leave Flying J's

9:50am We should reach the trailhead about this time.
N34 45.578 W119 02.987

10:00am Air down and disconnect at the Staging area.
N34 44.059 W119 02.364

We'll immediately hit the first obstacle, called the Gate Keeper, which is pretty representative what's more to come, hence its name. If you can't get past the Gate Keeper, you shouldn't be on the trail. (Don't let that statement scare you. Everyone should be fine.)

Break for lunch along the trail at Sunset Camp
N34 41.998 W119 00.023

4:00pm We should end up at Hungry Valley SVRA about this time.
We'll find an available campsite then setup camp.

Sunday 12/5/2010

We'll have breakfast then break camp, play around on the obstacle courses in 4WD Practice Area at Hungry Valley, maybe hit short trail or two at Hungry Valley if anybody still hasn't gotten enough wheeling by then, then air up and head home.

So post up if you want in!

Which gate keeper? If you mean on the John Bull trail, it's not likely a stock Jeep would make it past the gate keeper or make it throught the entire John Bull trail.

This Miller Jeep trail run sounds good to me, I haven't done that trail yet so if I can, I'll be there. :punk:

BeantownR6 10-17-2010 08:14 PM

maybe for me. i want to get a lift by the time this comes around.

JRickW 10-18-2010 12:28 AM

I'm in. Sounds like a blast. Got my CB installed today so I think I'm all set.

You might be able to handle it without assistance. Do you have tow points front and rear on your Jeep? We can always pull you through if you get stuck.

Your stock Rubicon will make it through without a lift.

I have the tow points :) need to invest in a CB. During my winter break from school I hope to have my lift done. Probably not in time for this though. damn tires are expensive. LOL

Does this mean you'll join us?

yomondo 10-19-2010 11:01 AM

Just wondering....would more of you be interested if I selected an easier trail?

JRickW 10-19-2010 11:25 AM

I think it looks good. I would think with help we can get everyone through ok. However, if we must go easier, I'm still in.

i read online the trail as being difficult and i want to get the lift so i don't keep on scraping underneath (even tho its built to take it). but i would still be in for a "less difficult" :) trail.

I just want to see what it would take to get more people to join us. I think the most fun on this outing will be the hanging out and partying. Any wheeling will do for me.

BeantownR6 10-19-2010 04:14 PM

yes partying will be awsome. i should let you know one of my other hobbies is homebrewing. i can probably bring a bunch of homebrew. do you like IPAs? :D:D

I would be less interested. So far as I can tell, Miller isn't all that difficult anyway. :)

Nthe8s 10-19-2010 07:45 PM

I would rather do this trail for the difficulty and location.

Never tried it.

Yah, like I mentioned it's not much more difficult than Last Chance Canyon or Cleghorn.

We'll stick to the original plan then. It's a fun trail. So does this mean you'll join us?

yomondo 10-20-2010 01:19 AM

Where's Rebuilt?

Hey Rebuilt, you in? I seem to recall in this thread you saying

Lets start planning this yomondo so we have a big group and a big party!

530ktm 10-20-2010 08:24 AM

I would like to go on this outing but I am going on our annual camping trip for 5 days over Thanksgiving Weekend with our group of RV's and dirt bikes. I don't think I could be ready to go the next weekend. I will keep this in mind if things change.

Hope you can make it. You could always just join us for the Miller Jeep Trail run and not camp.

thetoadLJ 10-22-2010 07:56 PM

Hmm i would like to go but im kinda nervous about taking my stock LJ as it is my DD too. i do have those hooks that come in the front and back, but idk if those are acceptable tow hooks =/

Unfortunately I don't know much about how equipped and capable the stock LJ's/TJ's are. Anyone else have an idea if thetoadLJ's stock LJ can handle a moderate to difficult rated trail and if the stock tow hooks are good?

thetoadLJ 10-23-2010 11:04 AM

well if i cant make it through miller, maybe ill meet you all and hungry valley. i just deiscovered that place when driving to bakersfield the other day and really wanted to go back there with my jeep.

Kinda doubtful, especially with street tires. LJs have an especially difficult time on difficult trails due to their longer wheelbase. The stock tow hooks are generally good enough though.

I was quite impressed today with that stock LJ taking on nearly all of the obstacles at Cleghorn.

I suggested that LJs have a difficult time on difficult trails, Cleghorn is a pretty easy trail. :)

Cleghorn has gotten more rutted out and a bit more difficult than in previous months. I don't remember anything on Miller Jeep Trail being any more difficult than what we did at Cleghorn this past weekend. I know a stock JKU X/Sport with street tires can do Miller Jeep Trail, and those have a longer wheel base than the LJ.

yomondo 11-02-2010 02:08 AM

So here's who we've go so far.

Going:
1. yomondo
2. JRickW
3. BeantownR6
4. Rebuilt

Maybe:
1. wranglerYJnewb
2. Jerry Bransford
3. Nthe8s
4. 530ktm

Any corrections? Anyone else?

Anyone who wants to do just Miller Jeep Trail is welcome to join us for that then bail anytime on Saturday.

And anyone who wants to skip Miller Jeep Trail and meet us at Hungry Valley (Gorman) on Saturday afternoon/evening or Sunday morning is welcome to do that too. Post up and let us know.

Rebuilt 11-02-2010 07:38 PM

What do you guys think about me adding a 1" shackle lift and 1" body lift?

I think your Jeep will be fine on this trail, although a little lift probably won't hurt.

Silversammy 11-08-2010 12:01 AM

Is the trip still on? New to the forum would like to come along if possible. Running a 2010 rubi. 3" lift, winch, 32" tires. Installing cb soon.
