Official Off-road lights thread

I know there are a bunch of threads scattered around, but let's get an official off-road lights thread going to help people decide what kind of lights they want for their Jeep.

Please post pictures of your light set-up if you have them. List what make/model of lights you have, size and what function they perform [spot light, fog light, flood/driving light, back-up, rock etc].

I am installing a set of Hella 500FFs right now that I will be converting to HID over the next week. We have a trip out to the dune in a couple of weeks and I need to be able to see out there.

i just ordered a set of IPF 968's to mount on the pre-runner bar on my 2010 sport. i'll let you know what i think when i get them installed. all the reviews i've seen of them are excellent, though.

I have KC Daylighters on my windsheild which are what I use most. I have 4 Hella 550's that are on the bumper, i decided to go with cheap lights up front since thats what I break the most.

Anybody have lightforce lights? The durability videos are pretty impressive...

I have a yj and I'm wanted the fog lights on most tjs what is the brand of them and where could you possibly get them at

Lithium Lotus 10-17-2010 03:06 PM

If you're looking for foglights/driving lights for when driving on the road, you can get cheap lights from any auto parts store. If you're looking for off-road foglights, quadratec.com 4wd.com and numerous other places sell them.

KC spotlights and cheap-o driving lights. I was really surprised with the Wally world ones, they were 100% plug & play, all the connections and such were pre- wired unlike KC.

I've been thinking about getting these long range KC's, these short range KC's, and these KC headlights. Does anyone have any experience with them?

SaharaCon 10-18-2010 11:08 AM

I just installed two 3.5" warn remote controlled fog lights on my windshield, n love them... I point them off to the side a bit on trails n it makes a world of difference... I plan on adding two warn 6.5" spot lights to the front bumper as well... So far, ide highly reccomend this brand...

my dad has the long range slims on his jeep no problems.

I'll have to get a pick of my old light set up. 2 kc 130w driving, 2 kc 130w long range and a pair of cheapo 55w floods on a over windshield light bar and the factory fogs and a pair of cheapo 100w long range on the bumper.

Here you go, Hella 500 FF, OTRATTW switches inside. As I said, I will be converting these to HID using a DDM Tuning kit:

I mounted kc light on the windshield and only have one complaint. BUGS BUGS BUGS Everytime I turn them on I could see a mile ahead but every bug for five miles makes a suicide dive for my windshield. (Note my wife loves the look of the lights)

erickpl 10-18-2010 03:05 PM

IPF968's on windshield and bumper in place of OEM fogs.

Both sets running the 110W bulbs.

Anyone running any waterproof lights? My Hella 500 FF's don't like being submerged at all lol

I will be converting my Hella 500 FFs to HID tomorrow, and DDM Tuning boasts that their HID kit is 100% waterproof and submergible. So that might help...

I gotta ask where did you get those switches and how did you mount those in there like that? Do the dummy plugs just come out or what? I have a 99 with three of them and I am gonna get some lights and I would love to run switches like that

Six Gun Matt 10-26-2010 08:54 AM

Here you go: OTRATTW

Be sure you get the ones that say they are ok for our years TJ. There are some that have a blinding light that would be pointed right at you with the angle they mount at on the TJ.

Yes, the dummy plugs come right out. And if your TJ did not come with factory fog lights, then one of the dummy plugs will have a factory harness there plugged into nothing that was originally meant for fog lights. You can tap into a few on those wires for your ground and the dash light. I still tapped into a line direct on the battery for the main power to the relay.

Six Gun Matt 10-26-2010 08:55 AM

And by the way, I did complete the incredibly easy HID conversion of those Hella 500 FFs, and I gotta say that they are incredibly bright. They really light up the night for sure. I will be going out to the dunes in a week and a half, so I will get some shots for you.
