Rolling R exhaust sound

Whenever I give my TJ gas (06 2.4L, 6spd. 63k) the engine/ exhaust makes a sound like when you roll your R's on your tongue or when a cat purrs. It sounds like it's coming from just in front of the passenger side floor. It's a new sound a getting quite annoying, I would like to track it down if possible. I didn't see any holes in my exhaust/cat but I haven't looked at the headers or very thoroughly yet since the weather has been so bad. What are the symptoms of a cracked header? any advice on where to start would be great.

Sounds to me like your catalytic converter may be bad...like the element came loose inside. With the engine off and exhaust cool...give the cat a nice thump or if you can shake it around with your hand, do that and listen to see if it sounds like something is bouncing around in there. A good cat shouldn't feel like there's anything moving in there.

If that's what it is, catalytic converters are covered under a federal warranty...something like 7 years/75,000 miles or might even be 10 years.

Cats do go bad, and like sentenced said, I'd guess that's what it is. If you must pass emissions in your state, then you'll need to fix it, if not, it will eventually work it's way out and be fine.

I was down looking and knocking around the cat tonight and I noticed the bracket just above the cat towards the engine is really loose. Theres tabs on the top that prevent you from turning the bolts (or mine are just rusted on) is that normal?

The bracket looking up toward the front of the jeep just above the cat. should this be loose?

A tab on top of the bracket bolts.

I didn't notice until I looked at the picture but one of the headers in the right of the picture looks black, maybe a crack and leaking exhaust making it black?

If you mess with those bolts be prepared for a struggle then to replace them! I just took mine out to replace because they were loose and would not tighten. Rusted up...

is it suppose to be loose though? it's either that or the header might be cracked.

If it's loose, that's most likely your problem...either the rolling R sound is the vibration between the two or it's leaking exhaust right there.

So how should I go about fixing it? I can't turn the bolts.

jwm1986 10-20-2010 05:31 PM

2 foot of extensions and a breaker bar

Top nut is a 15mm, and so is the bolt on the bottom side. Or were on mine at least.

Thanks. So if I end up breaking the bolts like you did you just replace them with some similar ones at the hardware store? any other advice before I try and tighten these bad boys?

jwm1986 10-20-2010 06:47 PM

I just put in some 3/8" grade 8s. I think they were 2" in length. And some loctite. I don't have any other advice really. Hit them with some PB before hand...
