What size gears are you running
 
What size gears are you running with 32s or 33s?
How's the mpg and highway performance?

I went in to my local 4x4 shop for some quotes on regearing to 4.56 with 33s. He said going from 3.73 to 4.56 would cut my mpg almost in half. He said that he would only recomend going to 4.10 and added the expense was so high ($600 and axle) for such a small jump in gears he said I'ld be better off with performance upgrades than regearing. :confused:

I want to hear you'll are running and how it's working for you. :cool:

I have the stock 3.73's in mine. I have 33's and have not lost to much power. My mpg is around 16.

I'm running 33 x 12.5s with the stock 3.73 gears. They work fine, I haven't noticed much loss in power or change in MPG.

He was FOS (full of ....) on 4.56 cutting your gas mileage in half with 33" tires. In fact, 4.56 is an ideal ratio for 33" tires. When I was still running 33" tires, I regeared to only 4.10 and regretted very quickly not having regeared to 4.56 instead. That's on daily driver TJ. His recommendations to install so-called "performance" upgrades instead was really out of line. Gearing is the only way to truly restore performance lost to having installed larger tires. :)

I have to agree, going from a 3.73 to a 4.10 is not big enough jump. $.10 would be good but measure your tires. If they say 33" they are probably 32". I have true 34" tires and run 4.88's. My gas is not great but not I own a Jeep. it is a Brick in the wind anyway. i would say I still get in the High teens with it. Really depends what you use your Jeep for. And.... $600/ axle? Is that just labor or parts as well? I get mine set for $200-$250 per axle labor.

That was parts and labor. I was estimating about $200 per axle for parts so I was floored when he said $600/axle. Seems high. He was resonable with the labor for the lift and was trying to talk me out of sending the money on regearing. That's why I'm so confused and wanted to hear everyones actual experience. :confused:

Unfortunately these days I'd have to say that 1200 for a complete re-gear isn't too much out of line. Like you said just for parts you are looking at around 500 bucks because you need a new carrier for the rear. Then about 350 an axle seems to be just about the going rate at "Most" 4x4 shops. However I agree with him in stating that going from 3.73 to 4.10 is not worth the money.

I run 35's with 3.73 gearing on my I6 with Auto. I get about 11 or so MPG. I like the ratio for street driving. I have plenty of power to cruise around at 70. And I also have a 4:1 for the 4Low gearing off road so the fact that I'm at 3.73 doesn't bother me. If I found some cheap used 4.10's I might swap them out myself, but I'm not going to pay for it.

yes, it's the same cost no matter which ratio.

For tires, wheels, lift, and regearing, it'll cost me over $3000. That's about $1G more than I can spend right now. I don't want to sacrifice performance, but something is going to have to give.

Bad Blue is your speedo correct.I have 4.10s 33s and 6cyl 5 speed.I get 14-15 average and 17-18 tops.I don't know anybody running 33s and getting that kind of mileage.Even Jerry doesn't get that kind of mileage.I sure would like to know your secret.Bill

I'm running the stock 3.73 with 36's and can't really complain--
I don't have an exact milage but as far as I can figure ( taking into consideration that the speedo is off ) i'm getting about 16 mpg.... I did notice a big drop in mpg when I put on the roof rack !!

Hello all i'm sorry for asking/hijack the thread but i'm just wondering let say i buy 33s and then regear to 4.56.. will my speedo be correct since the drive shaft(s) should still spin like it did before the bigger tires and the gears?

I asked the same question and was told it will still be off just a little. Someone else with experience may know better than me.

Me too. My mileage is abysmal, so bad that it's Top Secret... I don't want my wife finding out how bad it is or she'll ground me. ;) :D

It won't be THAT far off but since it only takes 5 minutes to swap in the correct $14 speedometer gear, no worries as you'll be able to get it dead-nuts accurate. :)

I have 33's and 4.10's. Like Jerry Bransford said, and had I spent a lot of time on here first, I would have gone to 4.56. I started with 3.07's so it made quite a difference, but I used to live in GA in the flats and 4.10's were great, but out here in CA now, and pulling a lot of hills I think my next gear change will be 4.88, and then I can step to 35's.

Thanks Jerry Bransford. I thought it may be off but again i never had new wheels or whatever so i had no idea and wanted to make sure before i start swapping stuff. I'm not saying i'll be buying tires tomorow but better know now than never.

4moneypit what rear do you have? i heard dana 44 is preatty much required (really really extremely highly recomended) for 35s

i didnt see it.. how do i set up my options for the forum so it keeps showing me when some 1 writes in a thread? The new subscribed threads thing is what i'm talking about. For some reason it will notify me for couple of days if some 1 replies but then it will stop, how do i make it so it notifies me (no matter how old the thread is?)

I just put on 32's with 3.73 gears. I'm not sure how the mileage is....but it actually seems to be better than it was. Power is down a little, but its still there if I need it, just have to wind it up a little higher.

But I've noticed that I drive it differently....tend to shift at lower RPM's since the shifts seems to come quicker. Probably why the mpg's are up. I still haven't fixed the speedo yet, my gear is on backorder, so maybe I'm just going slow!

Anyways, I wouldn't let the regearing hold up the lift install. Once you get it done, you'll know if its enough power for you or not. Its not like your Jeep won't accelerate once its lifted. Do the lift, then determine what you think you need once you know what you got!

I am running 4:10's with a 3spd auto and a 6, and get 16 in the summer and 14 or so in the winter. This combo works well for me in the hills of western Pa.

I have a custom intake and a flowmaster 50 delta exhaust. Not that much of a difference (but it's noticable) as much as its a kick in the pants thing since it sounds more powerful... My mpg is also better if i baby it compared to stock with the same babying driving.. For me babying driving is driving with the rest of the traffic... If you do step on it a lot, it eats gas like it's free.. when i installed my intake i loved the whistling noise it makes so i wanted to step on it and ended up getting only 20some miles and the gas arrow was down to the 3/4ths mark :devil: basically if you drive somewhat smooth I would get some "performance upgrades".. intake and exhaust.. but if you like to step on it than stay stock.

Regearing would actually give you way noticable power increase to the wheels and usually it increases ur mpg a bit compared to running with the stock gears with enlarged tires.

Can someone explain where the power lose is. Is it in the low end torque (trying to tow something) or is it in the high end (have trouble getting to 75 or 80 MPH)? I understand the basic principle of a larger gear means more power, kind of like the larger gear on a bicycle, but how does this relate back to engine RPMs? Why do you have a lower RPM with a smaller gear? :confused:
