Sunk Jeep in lake...need help woth fixing
I sunk my jeep a while back in a lake and just havnt had a chance to out it in the shop. I don't think I got water in the engine but did get water in the differentials and apparently computer. The budging on the tie rods are busted, it's leaking oil out the oil seal of the front differential at the yoke, and it's burning oil and idling weird. What should I do. Hopefully that's enough info. Thanks

Drain, flush, and refill anything that may have gotten water in it. Engine included( better safe than sorry)

jasonwrangler 10-22-2010 11:21 AM

dry all the electrical connectors.

Im really not going to be much help and wish you the best but any chance you have any pics of your jeep in the lake?

adkjoe 10-22-2010 11:55 AM

Sekstrand3 10-22-2010 11:56 AM

Those are some of the pictures. I'm still catching hell about it.

CHADWICK!!!! Good hearing from you  Seriously though empty out every single ounce of fluid in it let everything drip until not one single more drop can drip and flush out everything. Dry out everysingle eletrical connector and pcm. You may have to get a new pcm depending on the damage done.

That lake looks rather large and deep to me. Were you planning on driving across it?

were you trying to impress a girl, perhaps? :include:

damn.. that blows. sorry to hear that, good luck and keep us posted how it goes

USmarine212 10-22-2010 01:35 PM

I was just planning on bringing it To a shop but I'm hoping i won't have to rebuild the engine. You don't think the damage could be that extensive do you? And I thought the trail gradually sloped off and i was just gunna slightly put the front end in the water ad sit and smoke a cigarette but the whole jeep followed off the 4 ft bank and it took 24 hours of digging and pulling to get it out.

USmarine212 10-22-2010 01:38 PM

Yea I'm a new guy but I don't think I'll be scared off. I've been through some stuff with my job so good luck haha. But I'll deff keep y'all up to date

Bruck 10-22-2010 02:45 PM

When I saw the post, my first thought...CHADWICK!!!! Glad to know I'm not alone. Didn't look like a girl was involved this time.

Dizzle 10-22-2010 02:52 PM

Its possible to do major damage if you hydrolocked it. Bent rods and or valves, Cracked pistons ect. Ive been there done what you did lol... I was lucky after changing all my fluids both diffs, transfer case, tranny, even had to do a rad flush. I also cleaned out the throttle body and air intake pipe. I also changed the spark plugs just because... Was your engine burning oil before? Its a good sign it runs now though. no major un-happy noises?

USmarine212 10-22-2010 03:11 PM

No it wasn't before. But it runs alright. Just will shoot up the rpm's when idling but there's no wired noises like knocking or what have you. It just feels sluggish or like it's lost power

Dizzle 10-22-2010 03:29 PM

Engine light on throwing any codes? I had to replace my throttle position sensor on mine it would idle high and cough and sputter if you steped on it. Try cleaning up your throttle body I took mine right off the intake its just 4 10mm bolts and the throttle cable should just detach. The electrical plugs for the Map sensor, TPS and the Idle control air valve are usually the hard part (a small flat blade helps) Be carefull not to damage the gasket underneath the throttlebody itself. I took off the all the sensors its a small torx and cleaned it and them all out really nice I think the idle air control valve ( its more like a plunger that closes and opens gets stuck with dirt and or crud over time or in my case dirty pond water)

rrich 10-22-2010 03:53 PM

Gee, he had "floatation tires" on it!

rubicon hobby 10-22-2010 04:07 PM

First liquid is not compressable so if you got it on any cylinder then that is enough the other 5 will force the cylinder with water in it and bend or break something hence the oil smoke. So Drain the oil water is heavier that oil so it will come out first if the oil is the color of coffee with cream then you know theres water in it flush a quart or two of clean oil in from the top once its drained. You might want to a compression test as well. Also open everything you can like the air box where the air filter is located and all electrical connectors I use dielectric grease to help seal those you didnt say what year it is but if its got a distributer change the cap and rotor. Good Luck I am a marine mechanic by trade so I have seen this many times in boat engines.

USmarine212 10-24-2010 08:57 PM

Ok so the mechanic is fixing it steps which I'm fine with. First thing and only thing he has even looks at is the engine. The engine is running at weird Rpms, jumping up rpms when I disengage clutch, burning oil, and it smells like exhaust in the truck, and it's getting like 6 mpg compared to the 14 before I sunk it. He said the only thing wrong with the engine is the throttle fuel sensor.... Does this sound correct or could he have missed something?

GoldTJ 10-24-2010 09:06 PM

Welcome back,Chadwick!

toxictv 10-24-2010 10:24 PM

Don't care so much about the Jeep in the lake, but I feel justified giving you hell about those shorts.

Save the short shorts for someone else pal =P

USmarine212 10-24-2010 10:54 PM

Actually that's my buddy and those are physical training and exercise uniform shorts we have to wear in the marines haha. Attractive right?
