New soft top brand dilemna

I need to get a replacement for my Bestop soft top since the one I have on is beyond repair but im debating between getting a Bestop one or a Smittybilt one. Can someone tell me what the noticeable differences are besides price?

Thanks!

Quailty.

ammoniaman 10-25-2010 10:25 PM

Quality x2

Charming marketing guys.

MtnScout 10-26-2010 11:32 AM

I had bought a used jeep that had a Best top but did not have the right parts. I called best top and they bent over backwards and fixed me up I was impressed, when I get a new top that's who I would choose.

Janet, not just because "Charming Geoff" is here but I wouldn't buy anything but Bestop. And I ESPECIALLY would not buy ANY Smittybilt product. Their top is a cheaply made product, in strictly my personal opinion, that uses a very thin product that won't hold up for long at all. My opinion is that you would be extremely disappointed with the Smittybilt top.

toxictv 10-26-2010 11:49 AM

I have a brand new Bestop and love it :)

ajorosa 10-26-2010 12:15 PM

Bestop is the best brand out there and it's actually the maker of Jeep OEM soft tops. It would be great if they made a replacement top for the Sun-rider with out the frame.

MCDavis 10-26-2010 12:45 PM

If I had a TJ and needed a softtop now, I'd have to look long and hard at the Rampage frameless top formerly made by Viking. It's getting great reviews and looks really sharp!

If you only want a framed OEM style softtop, Bestop is the only way to go for a new one.

I just put a new BestTop on my seven-year-old Wrangler. It's so much quieter than my other one... and we just had a small monsoon come through, and no leaks anywhere.

Hands down -- BestTop is the way to go.

Is the fabric any different on the sun rider? (I modified my stock to be like the sun rider. )

x2 on both the monsoon bit and Bestop.

Thanks so much I knew I wanted a Bestop but I really needed some help with the reasons why and justifying it to some. Now what sites do you recommend that I purchase from?

Thank you again for all the help.

InfernoGirl 10-26-2010 03:09 PM

Janet, if you can wait a few weeks, I think there might be some interesting options being unveiled at SEMA Next week.... As far as where to buy, if you go to Bestops site, they have a list or link to their vendors. :)

I actually own the smittybuilt soft top in black with the tinted windows so I can speak from experience. It is not a top notch product but have had no issues that would keep me from buying another one. It does exactly what it is designed to do. Protect you from the elements. With that that being said, you must justify whether or not it is worth coughing up the money for for a more quality, more expensive product that does the exact same thing. Out the door I bought my brand new top for 198 dollars plus free shipping from eBay. However still in it's first year on my jeep it has never failed me yet and shows no sign of critical wear. I was a skeptic of buying cheap but every now and then you can get a good deal on a decent product and I rolled the dice and won IMO, plus it fit my budget. The money that you can save on the top can go towards something else for you jeep. In a nutshell I own the smittybuilt soft top and I do recommend it. Here's a few pics. Hope this influences your decision.

Less than a few weeks. I'm putting them on the web site right now.

New from Bestop:

Supertop NX: Factory style top, sailcloth, with factory door surrounds, factory header, plus quick release bows, and an adjustable plate to keep it tight. Also a "top arch" that spans across the top for extra support and tightness.

Trektop NX: Bowless, like Trektop. but made from sailcloth, with factory style door surrounds, sunroof flip feature, factory windshield header, AND removable side and rear panels. With panels off, it's almost exactly like a Safari bikini.

Price points should be within about 50 bucks of current tops. Supertop NX should be available soon, Trektop NX early in 2011.

Different mounting points on the door frame.

Janet209 10-28-2010 03:27 PM

Ok so I went with the Softop now I'm debating paying them $85 to install it or do it myself? Is it hard to do myself?

Jerry Bransford 10-28-2010 03:32 PM

Janet, it's only about a 10-15 minute easy job to remove the old and install the new top. The rear of the top is secured to the support bow by either velcro or snaps, release the rear from the support bow. Then unwrap the top from the front bow where its single wrap hides the 8-10 self-tapping screws that hold the top's front edge to the front header. From that point on, it's the reverse of what you just did to remove the old top.

Janet209 10-28-2010 08:32 PM

Thanks Jerry I think I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. I'm just so scared of tearing the new top ;(

Hey Geoff,
Does the Trektop NX come in spice, or only in black?

GoldTJ 10-28-2010 08:45 PM

Bestop RULES!Anything less is just an excuse!

scotiez 10-28-2010 08:55 PM

Not to HiJackk the thread or anything but my jeep has only the hardtop. I would like to have a softtop for summer time only, but i have no softtop hardware. What would you recommend... the Besttop supertop or the Trektop? I have been thinking of going the Trektop route because I wouldn't have to install bows and such stuff needed for the supertop. What do you think?

GoldTJ 10-28-2010 09:19 PM

I bought the Supertop, myself, but the Trektop was very interesting. The only reason I didn't buy the Trektop was that it looked very ghetto around the full doors, which I have, because Sport models only came with hardtop and full doors.

scotiez 10-28-2010 09:42 PM

I also have the hard doors on mine. Mine was ordered with the hardtop and hard doors from the factory.

Um, No....... Mine came from the factory with half doors and a soft top... Depends on what it was ordered with, same as any other Wrangler.

Not at all, Sport models are available with either. My Sport came new from the factory with a soft top and half-doors.

Melissas6570 10-29-2010 11:24 AM

My sport came with full doors and both tops

TXST8tj 10-29-2010 12:07 PM

She obviously bought the Bestop, but I still feel compelled to add a note about going cheap:

Don't do it.

I bought the Pavement Ends top in April and have regreted it ever since. It is a value line of Bestop's, but the fit quality is no where near where it should be, even for a value line. It's my fault for not sending it back, but I didn't actually use it for a few weeks after I bought it (no A/C).
I am not sure how the Smitty top is, but the Pavement top does not stay hooked into the door surrounds while driving. The plastic clip things are not nearly long enough and they just pop right out.
The fabric on the rear window is too long and actually uneven. It does not like to stay clipped in all the time either.

I expect thin canvas and thin plastic windows, which the Pavement top has. However, to me, for the top to not even stay hooked into the door surrounds does not make it a functional or practical top to me.
Other than that, I got what I paid for, and I am OK with that. For as much as I use it, I am fine with thin canvas and windows. When I do use it, it is to keep the elements out...but it doesn't do that.

End of my story. Buy Bestop from the start and save yourself a headache.
