Jeep YJ 5 speed won't go in gear? Help

Hi, I recently bought a 1994 Jeep wrangler with a 4.0 L 5-speed. The clutch and throw out bearing needed replaced (noisy when clutch pressed), but the transmission seemed to shift fine. I paid my local mechanic to put in a brand new clutch, throw out bearing, and pressure plate. The jeep drove and shifted fine for 3 days and was always shut off while still in gear. Then the one time it was shut off in nuetral, I could not get it to go back in any gear. It did not seem to matter if the jeep was running or not. I tried to shift the transfer case shifter (which seemed OK), but still could not get it in any regular gear. After it set overnight, I tried the same thing while the jeep was running and it shifted into third gear. I was then able to drive the jeep home and shift gears with no other noticeable problems. A few days later the trans would not go in gear again even when not running. After a while, I was able to get it in gear and drive home shifting fine. Could there be an internal problem with the transmission (synchro, etc)? Is it possible the clutch master/slave cylinder could cause this issue? Any other suggestions? The transmission has not made any noise or popped out of gear, seems to shift fine now even if not running? I would appreciate any ideas. thanks! John

Anyone?

Hi, Does anyone know if the clutch/master cylinder could be the cause of a 5 speed not shifting into gear even when the Jeep is not running? I don't want to replace parts that are not needed? Thanks! :banghead:

yes if the clutch is not releasing then the slave could be the cause.

Thanks so much for the reply. I will try to see if I can bleed it or replace it. I hope that will fix it. Thanks again! John

did you try rocking it while trying to shift?

My son said he pushed the clutch and rocked it sideways a little and it finally went in gear.
