What type of lift
After many years of wanting and crying about not having a Jeep, Christmas came early this year. I am now the proud new owner of a 1988 Jeep Wrangler.
I have been wracking my nugget on lift kits... IE how high should I go, what type should I get bla bla bla....... I will be doing moderate to a little bit more, type of wheeling.
The only thing is, and this is really cool, the wife wants 33 inch tires. So any help or advice would be great....

Well, hopefully the mods will move this to the YJ section, where you should get a bit more insight. here is a quick list.

3-4" lift perfect for 33's. Lots of decent ones out there. Rubicon express, Super lift, Black Diamond. etc. Spend a few extra buck on some nicer shocks such as Old man emu for a nicer ride your wife will like it.

Slip Yoke eliminator kit (SYE) might be needed with that much lift. Changes output shaft on the t-case, and some combo's come with a new driveshaft

You will hear bad things about your rear axle, dana 35 being weak, and it has issues, with big tires, lockers, and low gears.. but as long as you don't lock it and when you go off-road, stay off the gas you should be fine for a while.

Congrats on the Jeep.I know what you mean about wanting one. I used to be jealous of people with Jeeps, once upon a time. Now I know those people were broke.

If I go with a 1.5 black diamond lift and do a 1 1/4 shackle swap, would I be good to go? The thing is that the wife is spooked about go to high, she doesnt want to roll. What size tires would be good for something like this?

With anything Jeep, spend more the 1st time you do it, so you don't have to respend it down the road. That being said take a look at the black Diamond 3.5 kit. Very nice as I recall military wraps on the springs. Can run 31-33's just fine. and you may not need the SYE. As for the jeep rolling over. Chance's are if it did go over it would be a flop on the side. On road, they are for the most part stable. off road same thing. Just keep in mind it is or will be a lifted Jeep it will handle and drive differently than a stock Jeep. But as you add the lift you get bigger, wider tires to off-set some of that issue. Also when doing a shackle lift, its a great way to upgrade the stock one's but try to keep it as small as possile as tall lift schackle's can cause issues with the leaf springs. Also be sure to check the condition of your spring hangers, and if needed replace with after martket ones. That's all I have for now.. good luck with it

i run a bds 4 inch lift with a 1.25 inch shackle lift and i run 31's right now (winter) but have room for 33's and maybe 35's with a little trimming mine runs down thr road nice with the swaybars and track bars hooked up here is a pic of mine

thanks for all the info... Well its the weekend and the beer is cold and there is tinkering to be done. The wife is starting to regreat the jeep idea
