Questions about hydraulic ram assist ??
I've been to Moab several times, but this spring will be first time with TJ on 35's. You all know about the high traction, rocks, ledges, and other features that create more than usual stress on steering there.
So far, I've installed the Currie heavy drag link and tie rod setup. With 35's is there any need to think about ram assist?
Also, does ram assist have a negative impact on highway driving, I drive on highway 50% of time?
This is for a 2006 Rubicon, TJ not LJ, D44's, Superior shafts all around, 2" OME lift.
I've managed on some very difficult trails over the years being fully locked with 35" tires without ram assist. Not only that, the D30 tie rod attach point on the steering knuckle isn't really strong enough to hold up long with ram assist. It just wasn't designed for as much force being applied to it as will suddenly become available from the ram when in a high traction situation. I wouldn't do it.
What you should consider instead is installing an inline power steering fluid cooler like Currie sells and replacing the PS fluid with a good synthetic power steering fluid. In such conditions, the PS fluid can get so hot it can boil over and dino power steering fluid won't survive long in that environment. My power steering fluid used to get so hot that I could barely turn the steering wheel offroad after a long series of tight-twisty high traction trails. :)
where do you mount the power steering ' currie ' cooler ?
