oem soft top

need some clarification from the experts out there.

What is an oem soft top for a 4 door jk?? I recently purchased a 2010 4 door jk jeep w/ hard top. Want a soft top and doing some research.

First of all...what comprises an oem soft top for the 4 door jk? Is this a mix of mopar parts and bestop....or is it bestop only or mopar.

I see people saying both, so what is it? Is there a difference?

If I would have bought the soft top from the jeep dealership, what would it have been....mopar and bestop?

I have been looking for a soft top and several people that bought dual tops and now selling the soft top.....they say it is oem, mopar top with bestop surrounds.....so is this correct or expected?

I guess I'll call the dealership to ask what they would have sold me, mopar top with bestop surrounds?

Can someone educate me on this topic.....thxs for your assistance.

Here ya go.

this was about new tops coning soon from Bestop. Geoff from Bestop also answered lots of top related questions for us.

Bestop makes the OEM tops, so both are correct. But, the one that comes from the factory or the dealer has the mopar insignia on the windows, Bestop has their own label. If you buy from the dealer, you will pay a good deal more than if you buy from Bestop.

I may be wrong, but I thought that I'd heard somewhere that the material for the top that Bestop makes for Mopar is a little thicker than the regular Bestop material... Anyone able to say this is right or wrong for sure?

InfernoGirl 11-02-2010 10:20 PM

Afaik it's the same fabric, same everything, just different labels and prices. Mopar has to get their cut you know...

The OE top is completely Chrysler Jeep's. They sell it, support it, test it, help design it, etc.

Like all car manufacturers world wide, they contract out the manufacturing. For over 20 years, Bestop has been the company that manufactures the top for Jeep. (Our parent company by the way is a HUGE conglomerate that makes -everything- for cars from seats to engines to roof racks to those cool folding hardtops).

The factory top varies in several areas from the current aftermarket tops. The fabric, the door surrounds and the windshield channel are the biggies.

As InfernoGirl points out, in 2011 Bestop will start selling in the aftermarket a new top that is virtually identical to the factory top (and even has some extras).

Thanks Geoff, I knew I'd read somewhere that the soft top factory was different.

Geoff. So are the surrounds mopar or bestop? Do they contract the surrounds out to bestop?

I just got my jeep this summer and I learned many things. One was that I absolutely need a soft top for my unlimited for the summer. I have been following your posts to see what the differences are. I will be buying from you guys since the cost is better than the dealer. I really like the sunrider feature on the factory one. Does the current bestop one have this feature? If not does the 2011 version have it? Can you share with us some of these upcoming features or is it too early? Last but not least, any idea when in 2011 they will be released(hope springtime)? Thank you for any help you can give and all you have given this forum.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer, hence any part labelled "OEM" means it is what would come from the factory if you ordered it new, doesn't matter if it's a soft top, or a headlight..

Well again, to be precise, if they are sold by Mopar or Jeep, they are their parts. It doesn't matter who makes them. The thing with the internet is that it give all of us a chance to get insider information, and that frequently just equals too much info. The original seats in your Jeep weren't strictly made by Chrysler, but they are OE seats. Mopar sells originals. They may have been made by a third party, but who cares?

But that said, yes, we manufacture the door surrounds for our friends at Jeep.

Right now we sell a Supertop, which does not have the flip top feature, and a Sunrider, which does. Bestop's Sunrider is, basically, a Supertop with a hinge in the frame to allow the fliptop (it's a bit more complicated, but I'm simplifying).

We aren't calling our new top a "2011 version" (it would make people think it onyl fits the 2011 Wrangler). But the Supertop NX, which will have a flip top feature, should be out early in 2011.

The superdupertop 2011 sounds pretty cool..........haha. Can I buy direct from bestop or is it best to go through a retailer? Reason I ask is usually the manufacturer knows what they have and about what they have more than most retailers could. Also should I hold out for the nx or will there be a large price difference? Thanks for your answers.
