Droelle 11-08-2010 09:57 AM

Hell yeah! I was wanting to do that but I'm scared lol! How you do it? Give details please sir.

Oh Yeah no kidding! There's one about 10 mins away from my house that for sale. Chrome everything with 20's!!! Ugly as heck! Lol! Its been there for about 4 months now!

60 grit sand paper, orbital sander for most of the grill (Point of no return). Ruffed up the inside of the slots by hand.
Once sanded I washed it off and used a degreaser to clean it once again.

After that sprayed it with "Bed Liner" spray. I did numerous coats....Make sure you spray evenly and you don’t have to cover everything in first coat.

My only recommendations are make sure you aware when you are getting close to the bottom of the can. It will tend to spray splotchy when it gets close to empty.

As for as the weather stripping. The first time I masked it off. But when I took the tape off and you could still see the original color of the grill. So then I just coated stripping and all and seemed to work better. The "Bed Liner" spray actually peels right of the stripping so this made for a cleaner look in the end.

Looks Sweet!
Any pictures you have of the process would be awesome.
What brand of paint did you use?
Last, from one to ten on a scale of a beginner screwing this up, what would you say my chances are?
Thanks

Droelle 11-08-2010 11:06 AM

Thanks for the details bro. Just might put this towards the top of my list.

jb3rry 11-08-2010 02:09 PM

Sorry no pics of the process.

I could only find two different kinds of spray "Bed Liner" here locally. Rust-Oleum (Walmart ,Lowes & Home Depot) and Plasti-Kote (Tractor Supply). I ended up going with the Plasti-Kote.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being easy I would say this is a 2-3. The key is making sure you don’t spray too much too quickly. If you follow the directions on the can it's not hard at all(Shake, shake shake). There is not a lot of dry time between coats which makes this nice also.

I have read that you don’t want to sand too much of the paint off. I am not sure if this is true or not. I sanded to only remove the gloss look from the grill. With the orbital sander and hand sanding only took me about 10 mins. I think the purpose of the sanding is to ruff up the gloss so the spray will adhere to it.

Additionally if you don’t want to spray the JEEP logo you can use a heatgun\hair dryer and some dental floss to remove the logo.

Side note: I did the same with the Dealership License plate holder. I sanded the dealership off and sprayed.

Looks sweeeeet. At first, I thought it was the soft top roof, but then I caught on to the grill. Looking good.

RB-10rubicon 11-08-2010 02:28 PM

Looks real nice its got a mean look to it

aelwero 11-08-2010 02:50 PM

Masking?

Skip all o that :) you can remove the entire front grille in all of 2 minutes with a flathead screwdriver... 6 two piece push-in clips across the top and the bottom just pulls out... pop out the turn signals, remove the lenses, and just lay it out on newspaper and go to town :)

jb3rry 11-08-2010 02:51 PM

Sorry for the misunderstanding... I didnt Mask the grill. I took the grill off.... I masked the weather stripping attatched to the grill

DougHeffernan 11-08-2010 03:21 PM

That really looks good.. Wonder how it would look on stone white..

Luckdog 11-08-2010 03:21 PM

Looks BA! I especially like it on silver.

Bombero37A 11-08-2010 04:07 PM

Looks great! Welcome to the Jeep addiction boss!

jb3rry 11-08-2010 06:25 PM

A long expensive addiction.....

MTH 11-08-2010 11:15 PM

Nice! I love that look--it's like the Mountain edition (gray grille) but made more aggressive by virtue of the color and texture.

Did you also take off the silver plastic piece in the middle of your bumper? That looks good too. All around good looking rig.

jb3rry 11-09-2010 08:50 AM

mmm I dont think I had a silver plastic piece in the middle of the bumper.

Interesting . . . . Looking at Jeep's website, it looks like the Sahara is the only 2011 model that has the middle silver piece in the bumper--the Sport and the Rubicon appear to have full black bumpers. You can see the piece I'm referring to in my profile pic (2010, though not a Sahara).

aelwero 11-09-2010 10:27 AM

I was under the impression that the Sahara was the only model to have that silver accent in any year... maybe someone wanted a sahara without it and the dealer traded em out or something?

MTH 11-09-2010 10:47 AM

By golly you're right . . . on Jeep's website, whether for 2010s or 2011s, the silver piece only appears on Saharas.

Except it also came on all of the Mountains, even though it doesn't appear that way on the website (where you can still "build your own" 2010). If you Google "Jeep Wrangler Mountain" and look at the images of the various Jeeps on the lots, you can see the silver piece in all of them. I think it works on the Mountain because it matches the gray grille, but the all black works great on the OP's vehicle.

Apologies by the way to all for hijacking this thread . . . . :hijacked:

aelwero 11-10-2010 10:08 AM

"•High-gloss mineral gray grille and bumper appliqué" - Jeep.com

They did :) It's the same dark color as the grill so you don't see it until you look, but it's there... Learn something new every day...

STxWrangler 11-10-2010 11:35 AM

I have a black JK ... maybe I should paint my grill..... Silver? :flipoff::rofl:
Actually.....that would probably look BA.

greenenvy 11-10-2010 01:19 PM

ThAt really looks good. I'd love to do that but I think hubby would crap if he saw me out in the garage sanding the grill lol

TheMisty 02-06-2011 08:06 PM

I'm so tempted to bedline my grill and wheels, yours looks GREAT!

myjeepandmydog 02-06-2011 11:18 PM

Dam that looks nice. I need motivation to do my grill and wheels.
