Power steering pump
 
I have a 97 TJ that I replaced the power steering pump on. When I filled up the reservior with ATF as called for it runs great for a couple of minutes and then starts to squeal and foam. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

shouldnt be using ATF. get some power steering fluid.
hows the fluid level? and also did you bleed the system when you putting the pump in? could be air inside the system.

Sounds like you need to bleed it.

jack the front wheel in the air, turn steering from end to end with engine off 20+ times, lower the front check fluid level add if needed.

Thanks everyone, it turned out the new power steering pump was bad. I took it back and they replaced it with a new one, I installed it, bled it and I'm back on the road again. Cheers to all those that replied to my question.

For anyone else, make sure to avoid starting the engine before bleeding the PS pump. As jasonwrangler said, turn the steering wheel fully back & forth at least 20 times without the engine running to bleed the air out. Starting the engine before bleeding all of the air out of the PS system can, through cavitation, quickly ruin a new power steering pump.

And for goodness sake, DON'T use ATF!! Use real power steering fluid.

OP got lucky part store took pump back as the Auto Zone or Advanced Auto here wouldn't have done that if they bothered to check you had used ATF. I found that out when changing power steering pump on kids car. Luckily I had asked beforehand if it was still cool to use ATF now days.
