Finally finished lift! now questions!

After the crappy process of drilling and hammer out those stupid upper rear shock bolt's the 2.5" lift is finally in. Looks great, however it drives like complete crap!! I can't go over 40mph otherwise I get massive death wobble to the point where the jeep will either explode or put me in a ditch. At around 25-30mph the rear vibrates pretty good as well. I installed a 1.25" BL and 1" MML along with the 2.5" coils and shocks. I havn't had a front end alignment yet and I will do that ASAP but I can't imagine that's going to be the miracle fix for everything is it?

Also the 30" tires I have on it at the moment are unbalanced and wobbled like crazy at 50mph before I put the lift on when I had stock suspension. Is there any way that the lift dramatically increased the wobble from the tires and that's what I'm feeling, because the death wobble is 100X worse now than it was when my tires were unbalanced on stock coils and shocks.

You have changed a bunch of stuff at one time and given the fact your tires were junk before and you haven't gotten an alignment yet could be most of the problem.

You're experiencing death wobble,

check out this website for more information.

Yucca-Man: Death Wobble

The lift only exacerbated the unbalanced tires effect. What you need to do now is to start narrowing everything down. Start with the unbalanced tires and get your alignment done (since you need to do that anyways), then move on the hardly stuff. Search the forums for death wobble for more TJ specific instruction.

I had the same problem, I got an alignment and problem solved!

Gumpy2030 11-15-2010 09:42 AM

I had the exact same problem when I put my 3.5" lift on. After I got my alignment and tightened up my front track bar the problem all but went away. When I replaced my bad and unbalanced tires the Jeep now drives like a Cadillac compared to how it was before. Bad tires are often overlooked but really will affect the overall drive.

Well I have tires being delivered tomorrow from 4wheel parts.com all mounted and balance. So I will throw them on and do an alignment and see where I'm at. Do you think an alignment and unbalanced tires can cause DW that badly? Before I put the lift on I had death wobble at 45-50 mph because of my tires. I swapped tires with my XJ for the day and the TJ drove like butter and the XJ got death wobble from the tires so I know the tires are junk. I beleive it but I'm curious why the lift would exacerbate the unbalanced tires, maybe because now the toe in is off as well? Hope that's all it is, should have the new tires and wheel on tomorrow night/Wednesday morning.

Toe in=alignment

Agreed. Alignment and balance those tires. Once your alignment is off it magnifies out-of-balance tires.

Wouldn't hurt to have the balance checked on the new wheel/tire combo, too.

Well that makes me feel much better. I know I can figure out the problem but after all that work this weekend I just want it to work lol

The BL, MML, and suspension lift is actually quite simple to do, I did all of it by myself and have never done any of it before. I'm pretty handy and have worked on trucks for many years but never put on a lift. All was well until I got to those darn upper rear shock bolts, MAJOR HEADACHE and the TJ is only 4 years old!!

You had the DW before, then added a lift, which can throw the geometry of the front end out whack. Ditto all the other posts, alignment!

When I had my new lift with bad tires and no alignment it was so bad when I hit about 40 that I couldn't go any faster. It was so bad it almost ran my off the road. So I wouldn't worry too much, I think you will be fine after your new tires and alignment.

Thanks for keeping me sane guys! New tires tomorrow and an alignment, I will let you all know!

ohsixteejay 11-17-2010 08:21 AM

Well you guys were right yet again! I put on my new BFG km2's this morning and death wobble is gone!!! I just need to drive it a few miles home then I can do an alignment and I'm good to go. Thanks guys!

glad to hear problems were solved. My jeep drove nice and I put a bb lift with new rancho shocks and it did not ride as nice. Put brand new 33" duratracs with new rims got it aligned and it rides nicer than when I had no lift and old tires.
