Custom-Built Grab Handles

I was walking around the pond by my office a few weeks ago and I saw a Wrangler with grab handles on the roll cage. Oh man, I thought, I need a set of those. I'm not much for going on big searches for things and my wife and I both have a creative streak, so we built our own.
The raw materials:
Nylon webbing
Heavy-duty snaps
Cheapy BMX handlebar grips
PVC pipe

The construction

To make the handgrips, I cut the ends off of each side of the PVC grips (one side had a big flange and the other was closed) and jammed a piece of PVC pipe into them to make them rigid. I had to use some soap to make them slide, but they aren't coming out of there anytime soon.

Then, we cut the nylon straps to the right size and pounded the snaps into place. After that, my wife sewed 'em together. That was a bit tricky because she had to sew the second side after the grips were already in place. But she's da woman and had no trouble with that.

In Their Intended Habitat

We've been rolling with these on board for a few weeks. My kids both use them to pull themselves up into the Jeep and they are rock-solid. I wasn't sure whether snaps would work (I was planning on using nylon clasps like you see on luggage) but they have plenty of holding power.

If I were to make another set, I would definitely be more careful in cutting the ends off of the handlebars; they're just a bit ragged-looking. And we would use button thread to sew them together since it's a bit heavier. But overall, I'm very happy with how they came out!

Thats pretty cool! I've been thinking these would be easy to make, but wasn't sure how to make the actual handle part. Never considered pvc and bike grips! Now if only I had a sewing machine.

You don't need no stinking sewing machine. Pull out that old George Foreman Grill you have buried somewhere in the kitchen...overlap the nylon web and place in the Foreman grill then melt the strapping together. Sometimes you just gotta think outside the box....LOL!!

Needless to say, I am just kidding. The Grab handles look great. And to be honest, there have been times that I wished I knew how to use a sewing machine. Any more with my old AARP eyes, I do well to thread a needle.

Good job on these. I bought my first set but plan on making a set for my rear roll bar now. Thanks for the idea. This is why I love forums and sharing ideas with fellow wheelers.
Thnx

Looks good! the only thing holding me back, is last time I have straps around my roll bars they crushed the padding and left it that way. Its a bit ugly now ;( I need new padding for in it I guess. But you may have inspired me to make some... Good work!

try and use those noodles for the pool under the padding cover. ha

Well, I bought mine and I love them. However, being a fairly good "seamster", they would not have been difficult to fashion. Some ballistic cloth, nylon webbing, velcro, and handle material. Presto!! Never thought about making mine own, until I got these and seen how simple they are. But, I'm NOT disappointed or unhappy with them. Very high quality materials and construction.
