U-joint install problem

I am having trouble getting both clips installed with new u-joints for my rear drive shaft. I can get one in, but then there is not enough room for the other. I have ruined two u-joints in the process and have decided that I will try another brand tomorrow. These were Duralast from AZ.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be that I have a bent ear? If so, what is the best way to remedy this?

Easy have had this problem with all of mine. Put the joint in a vice with a socket just big enough to fit in the hole easily. The take a punch and bang the ear. One wack at a time. It should flare just enough to get the clip in. If not give it another wack.

Yep, wacking the ears sometimes gets things to line up the last little bit.

One thing to look at also (from what I have learned from my u-joint screw ups) is that possibly a needle bearing fell to the bottom of the cap, and is preventing it from going on all the way. Usually this stops the cap about 1/16th of an inch short of where it needs to be for the clip to go in.

ive had one needle do that as well but he has tried it more than once and should have seen that if it was a problem. if i wantded to spread the yoke a little i would take a piece of 3/8 or 1/2 " threaded rod and with 2 nuts and fender washers gentle spread the yoke.
