Dealers and how some operate

This is a story about what some dealers will try to do to you .

An old friend called me last night he has a daughter out east 700 mile from him . (she is 43 years old) He was telling me she just traded cars so I ask what she had and what she bought. She traded a 2006 Wrangler with 43,000 miles one owner and bought a 2011 Wrangler.

This dealer gave her $5,000 in trade ( it was a sahara) with both tops . It had never been in an any kind of collision and it,s now on the dealers web site . (at three times that price)

It makes you feel like a butt kick,en is in order

I'm not defending dealers, but blame the daughter, not the dealer.

yep dealers rape you on tradein on jeeps. or any car. we went to trade th Bf's gt mustang with an add on or three and they wanted to just give him 9k for it. they retail for 17-18. crazy we passed. there was an issue or two with the TJ anyway. they thought I didnt know anything ha ha ha

Yeah, no offence or anything but she could have done a little research.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. That was a pretty harsh response. She was 43, not 16.

And I'm not married :D

I work for a dealer, and hearing stories like that make me sick. I take offense when people badmouth dealers in general but after hearing stories like that it's not hard to wonder why...

BANGER 11-22-2010 06:40 PM

No one deserves to be treated like she was stupid or not .

Some people just don,t think about some things . This lady is the head of the music department of a very well through of school and makes big bucks . I guess some things don,t mater

Banger it sucks what happened to your friends daughter, but we all learn eventually, and most of us learn the hard way..... That's just life. Yes, the dealer robbed her, but unless he threatened her in some way, she had every option to decline the offer he made.... :(

not that i think the best of dealers but would any1 else not try to get the best deal possible? if i was buying a car and i thought i could get it for a low ball offer i would try too

wolfsbone01 11-22-2010 07:35 PM

well first off the Sahara package wasn't even offered in 2006 so that might be part of it, but the other thing some dealers will rip people off on Wrangler because they know they can turn around and make 3 to 4 X the money on it without having to spend alot on it.

jameslee97206 11-22-2010 07:48 PM

Wow, they ripped her head off. I'm a dealer in Oregon and can honestly say I offer people what their car is worth. A lot of dealers do try to low ball you on your car. I would really blame her for not taking someone with her that knows cars a little.

aelwero 11-22-2010 08:26 PM

what's her take on it?

I've bought cars without haggling before... I HATE haggling, and with used lots, I've almost always paid the price painted in the window with no muss, no fuss...
I'm aware that I might save a few hundred bucks if I go find an oil spot under it and complain about the lack of tire tread and other such tomfoolery, but I'll pay the extra to not have to go through the whole stupid process of it...

Point being, maybe she's OK with the deal she got because she didn't have to act like a cheap retard to get it... (no offense to any pro hagglers... I got nothing against people who haggle, just the act of haggling itself)

Too bad she didn't consult her dad before she bought. There must be more to the story.

Did not even look at a NADA or KBB book? Even basic internet searches would give a ballpark figure for trade-in.

Exactly how was she treated as if she were stupid? There is quite a bit missing in the story. Was she forceed to trade in at that price or did she readily agree to it without question? There are tons of extremely intelligent people who have no clue how some simple everyday things work.

Or don't care :)
It's not a ridiculously common thing, but there are some folks who just don't care that much about money...
