Radiator drain valve LEAK...

Hello, I am looking for advice on my sons '99 TJ...(I LOVE that thing!!!)

I drove it to town the other day and when I got out of it I could smell antifreeze. Did a quick once over and couldn't see anything wrong. Assumed maybe it was another vehicle parked nearby and went on in store.

When I came back out I noticed a pretty large spot of coolant on the pavement under his Jeep. Raised hood HOPING to find a bad hose. (read easy fix) Everything looked good with hoses.

Poked head under jeep and most of antifreeze appeared to be coming from bottom right side of radiator. (passenger side) I spotted what looked like the radiator drain petcock. It looked like the most of the leak was coming frmo there. ITS PLASTIC!!!! WHAT??? Your kidding me. Anyway, I gave it a little twist and it felt stripped. It would turn so far and then felt like it was stripped. So, I turned it to where it felt the most tight and left it.

Got home and it appears to not be leaking. Good, but now I am worried about it as he is leaving to return to college on Sunday and driving on mostly mountain roads for about 4 hours where there is VERY limited cell service.

Fluid level is still good. It did not loose that much. It never ran hot. Just appeared to leak out of petcock. He had just drove it home from school about 4.5 hours. Could it have vibrated loose on that drive? I wouldn't think???

Anywho, looking for advice. Is that normal for that piece of crap PLASTIC petcock? Is it repairable or do you have to replace the entire radiator?

HELP!

Thanks! BT

You can get a replacement at any parts place. A cheap fix would be to pull it out, wrap it in Teflon tape and reinstall it sometimes that is all it needs.

Awesome. Thanks meyers. Hopefully that will be the quick fix that it needs. I will check into the replacement valve. Is it something more substantial than plastic?

(Love your state by the way. Wife has family in Nashua.)

Let me know how this works for you. I have been smelling something, and tonight noticed a small couple of drops antifreeze on the garage floor. Sure enough, there is antifreeze collecting on the passenger side of the pan under the radiator. I am hoping that the plug is just loose! Where do I look to find this exactly?
