Dana 35 to Dana 44 swap
 
I have a 92 YJ with a 5 speed 2.5, 4 inch skyjacker lift and 33x12.5 tires. When swapping to a Dana 44 will I have to change anything?? Also, for gear ratio Ive been told 3 different ratios. 3:73, 4:10 and 4:56. Any insight? Thanks! 0|||||0

Your rear gear ratio will need to be the same as your front. If you are grabbing a 44 from a TJ you'll need to change out the spring perches and maybe do some other light welding.

If you're planning on doing a full regear, go 4.56. Your front axel is already 4.10. 4.10 will be fine with 33's, but 4.56 is idea.

Both will need to be the same.

If my sources are correct, there is some wiring to do too that can be a big hassle

Wiring????? Maybe if it had anti-lock brakes but there is no need for these as YJs didn't have anti-lock. There shouldn't be any wiring. Just brake plumbing but that shouldn't be hard. As one of the other guys said there will be some welding involved. Make sure you get the rear pinion angle correct when putting on the spring perches.

When I talked to my off-road specialist guy about swapping my 35 for a 44, he told me that there was a lot of wiring to do, that it would be a big hassle. I would love for for us to be wrong because I would rather go to a junkyard to get a used 44 then pay a lot more for a Super 35

Chuck the 44 idea and get a Ford 8.8. 4.10's are common in them and they are virtually a bolt in deal.

Yeah I havent seen any wires coming from the rear axle

Get a new guy.. a tj 44 will just bolt in place of the 35.. You might have to adj the driveshaft, but that's about it.

Cept a TJ 44 rear's gonna have coil spring pads welded on it and he needs leaf spring perches :)

Yes, but guy has a TJ who asked so bolt in... ON a YJ cut and weld... Got my 8.8 waiting for install in YJ this winter. Just have to find the time.

Forget those weak axles, I'm going for a Ford 9" rearend & Ford 44 high pinion front for my YJ. It will then be ready for a V8 conversion some day!!

My name says it all. A wife & 2 kids limit what I can spend. I wish I could just go to Dana 60s but I don't have a grand to spend on just the axles. I find great deals on parts from friends who up-grade.
