I wish I could’ve caught him doing it!

I was driving home from work a few days ago through Lansing, it was about 3am and I heard something hit my Jeep. A little way down the road at a stop light I got out and checked to see what it was, I couldn't find anything but i knew something had happened because it was prety loud and I didnt have the raido going so there was no mistaking it. The next day rolls around and I see in the day light that someone had shot my passanger side mirror with a BB gun it looks like. Its a pretty cheap fix but Im just thankful they didn't shoot out any of the real windows or that it wasn't a real gun. Let me hear some of your stories about what vandals have done to your jeep and what you did about it if anything.

"I wish I could’ve caught him doing it. I’d have given anything to catch that a****** doing it. It’d been worth him doing it just so I could’ve caught him doing it." Pulp Fiction

Um, rocks thrown by your tires will do the same damage..... just sayin'

Peepers 12-08-2010 02:10 PM

Some one stole 2 sets of KC daylighters, 2 flood lights, and 2 cheapo off road lights off my jeep. Filed a police report, and I have my friends and family on the look out for any vehicles with light setups like what was stolen.

Still no action so I'm slowly replacing them and upgrading. still looking for ways to make it harder for them to get stolen again.

Not my Jeep but walked out of a club about 9 years ago. As we neared my bad-ass Camaro, my friend says "That guy just jumped out of your car!" When I looked up, all i saw was someone getting into a car parked paralled to mine on grass facing opposite direction. I asked "Are you sure?" Then the car pulled away. When I got to the car, I realized grease all over window and the door was unlocked. Looks like they tried to steal radio first, but let that sit to steal amplifiers and speakers. Nothing was missing except my radio faceplate rendering it useless. When I got in the driver seat and went to insert my key, it was then I realized they tried to steal the car!! There was no ignition and the steering column was ripped apart. I guess because they couldnt get the car started, they decided to try and steal the stereo system. $3000 damage, and all they got was the radio face plate. Luckily I didnt see them get out because I am a pretty fast runner. Not saying I would have caught them but maybe enough to got a plate number. Oh well. I got a better stereo and sold the car anyways.

Not saying someone didnt shoot it, but thats a damn good shot if someone was able to shoot a moving jeep at 3am with a bb gun. Must've been a trained sniper.

toshpate 12-08-2010 03:00 PM

had face plate stolen out of current jeep as well as a car charger and my keys.. had speaker stolen out of a past jeep

CMEvans79 12-08-2010 03:03 PM

Back when we had our seabring someone took a blunt object to the drivers side mirror it was cheaper to replace it than file an insurance claim...

had 2 mirrors shatter that way.. once when my sister was driving and once with me driving

went a little too fast in reverse :/

Lawngnome 12-08-2010 03:26 PM

Like I said, I'm just guessing It was a BB gun. Some of my friends and my aunt has had window's shot out by BB's while they were driving. I was in the city and not the best part either, a place where you dont stop at that time of night to check on it. Houses are lined prety close to the road. I couldnt have been traveling more than 25mph when it happend either. Im not disagreing with you but this is why I think this is what happend.

village idiot 12-08-2010 03:30 PM

Seems to me like a rock thrown up by the tire couldn't hit that side of the mirror unless you're in reverse.

JeepinDave 12-08-2010 04:08 PM

Its very possible it was a kid out causing damage to vehicles. I had a buddy who had someone light up his car with paintballs at night once. Apparenly destroying peoples property is the fun thing to do now-a-days. who knows.

jebby 12-08-2010 04:15 PM

when my tj was brand new (still my uncles at the time) its driver side was keyed from under the side mirror to above the back fender and DEEP. was in the hospital parking lot where my aunt works..... :(

WannaJeepBad 12-08-2010 04:38 PM

So how easy is it to get into a Jeep other than a Truck,Car, SUV i dont know if its just that yall have expensive stuff thats worth goin to jail over or if its not protected well. Are they the same? or just easier to get into. I think thats what im tryin to say/ask.

Joshpeb2 12-08-2010 05:07 PM

A softtop jeep is about as easy as gets......unzip/cut windows and you're in. Cant say that for most vehicles.

toshpate 12-08-2010 05:16 PM

my thefts occured with the top off.

Mike_3303 12-08-2010 05:25 PM

Yeah your tires could have shot a rock up and broke it, never done it myself, but i have cracked a window of a person driving too close behind me before

toshpate 12-08-2010 05:30 PM

most of my jeeps have at least one cracked mirror. figured it was part of having a jeep with tires that stick out

BLK00TJ 12-08-2010 08:05 PM

A year or two after I got my TJ, I was really into mountain biking and came home late one night from a bike ride. I was about to go to sleep at 4am and remembered my bike was still on the tire rack. I had the rear bike tire locked with a u-lock, there were two locks on the rack itself, and another cable lock locking the bike to the tire. Since I was planning on get up to go riding at 6am, I figured for 2 hrs it would be safe. Nope. Punks pryed the rack open and cut the cable lock and took the bike. If that wasn't bad enough, they also used white spraypaint on my black jeep and wrote "Nice Lock". The paint was still wet so it was easy to get off thank goodness.

Karma may have intervened because that same morning, vandal hit the community boat yard and vandalized a few boats and took some jet skiis. One of the kids ran into a bouy while driving it at night and was killed.

I'm not sure if it was that same group because the cops never recovered my mountain bike.

I never keep anything in my soft top TJ that I won't miss. I leave all locks unlocked so they aren't tempted to cut the top to get in (friend of mine had that happen and couldn't believe they didn't just unzip it). The only think I keep in my glove box is the manual, registration, a few spare fuses and bulbs. The console keeps my repair reciepts and a couple tools that are cheap and replacable.

DKDKGUS 12-08-2010 08:19 PM

I've had 2 passenger side mirrors and 1 drivers side broken in the year and a half I've had my YJ. Second was at less than 20MPH. All were from the rear tires kicking stones forward.

crafty 12-08-2010 10:22 PM

Was into classic cars for a few years, had vandals hit the street and got a nice red spraycan stripe down the side of a white car. Used a Mcquires (sp) product and elbow grease and cleaned it right up. Owner of a white F150 down the street made a store run to buy some also.

sonofabeach 12-09-2010 05:42 AM

So you drove by, then someone ran out into the road behind you , fired and hit your mirror? I suppose it's possible but I'm thinking rock damage. Good thing he was a really bad shot if so.

sbaird 12-09-2010 09:48 PM

I had almost the same thing happen earlier tonight  i was leaving a friends house in a not very good neighborhood and heard something hit my rear side window on the driver side... i stopped to see what it was and noticed a perfectly round hole in the window of my soft top! i looked around and never found anyone but looked around in the back when i got home and found the BB in the back  Really wish i could have found the person who did it! Anyone know a better way than tape to patch a hole in the window?

I've never tried it, but maybe a pool repair kit? Vinyl adhesive with a vinyl patch. I've been thinking of using it to fix a crack in my half door.

Sorry to hear that and glad that it didn't hit you or break a real window, but thank you for posting this because it show that my situation wasn't that far fetched. I think depending on the top you have that you could order individual windows from Quadratec or somewhere.

hannahuffster 12-14-2010 04:17 PM

I had my window washer nozzles stolen off my yj at walmart. They unscrewed them and took them off the hoses... I guess I have been fairly lucky though, my boss has had 3 TJ soft tops stolen off his jeep in the last <almost> 3 years. Once on main street in town at 7:00 durring the summer (light out side) once outside of a bar in AR, and the last time right in his driveway at his house where they not only took his top but his doors also. That's the strangest one too, they live in a SUPER nice subdivision where everybody knows everybody...

Danjo 12-14-2010 04:28 PM

My dad's old Subaru hatchback had the battery stolen out of it when I was a kid. He left the car unlocked at night (back in those days, hell, we kept the doors to our house unlocked at night) and someone popped the hood, disconnected the battery, and hauled ass. They left the hood propped up overnight after they left. Dad was sooooo pissed off.

YHSublime 12-15-2010 09:19 PM

I had a little kid throw a rock at my car about a month and a half ago. Literally watched him pick it up, and though to myself "no WAY is he even going to consider something that ballsy." Sure enough, he launched it right at my passenger door. Good think I've got the top halfs of my doors soft.

Stopped the car immediately and ran about 8ft, there was no way I was going to catch the little s***. He had some cronies on the corner who all watched, but kept quiet the entire time.

No damage, but still, I was pissed.

Mortalis5509 12-15-2010 10:16 PM

That had to be a pellet gun if not a 22 cal. Moving away from them at speed and the person also being concealed makes a bb pretty hard to do anything with distance.

YJPunisher213 12-16-2010 05:17 AM

I havent been hit.... YET! I live in Cincinnati where we have a pretty substantial crime rate. I lock my console at all times, remove stereo faceplate, and have a 20mm ammo can bolted on the rear inner fender that locks. All my accessories (lights, winch, etc) are welded to the Jeep, and my beloved CCW permit that legal allows me to carry a Springfield XD .40 to blows a thiefs brains out.

You're assuming he was aiming at the mirror. :)
