Hello everyone. Well, I took my jeep to the dealer due to an oil leak. Turns out it is the rear main seal. The guy also told me that the mechanic noticed a broken transmission mount. Drawback is that it is not covered through my extended warranty plan (sux). I'm no mechanic whatsoever, but how hard is it to replace these? I'm gonna go purchase the manual today to read up on it. Thanks for any input.

On my 98, the only transmission mount is 4 bolts that go through the skid plate. Unless he means one of the bolts holding the transmission to the engine. Not sure.

The mount is in between those bolts and the trans. The bolts attach to the mount and the mount attaches to the trans.

Thanks guys. After a bit more search, I found a guide on rockcrawler.com. Seems pretty simple. Another quick question: Any thoughts on the aftermarket mounts such as Oreily's? I read on another post about "poly" material. The oem one is for $97! Oreily's, which is the same brand that advanced carries is only $34! Just want to make sure the quality is there.

Prothane,Energy Suspension poly urethane are two good products to look for. The OEM one is made from rubber and IMO costs way too much.

Just replaced mine; it was really simple, the only part that could have been a little easier was putting the skid plate back on since I only have one floor jack which was holding up the transfercase/transmission. If I either had a second jack or someone else at home to help hold one side up it would have been a piece of cake. Even so, it probably only took me an hour (which included cutting off a nut the PO cross threaded onto one of the transmission mount studs).
As for the poly vs OEM mounts, can't really say if either is better. I've heard other complain that the poly ones make things vibrate too much, but I've never used one to experience it myself. Mine was making a bad noise on acceleration so I was anxious to get it fixed and ended up buying one from advance auto instead of waiting on one to ship. Seemed identical to the one already on my Jeep, just not in pieces. Its been working great so far; less vibrations than before and no more clunking when taking off.

I would never install poly transmission or engine mounts. They transmit too much vibration and rubber works well and lasts a long time. I have run poly mounts several times and will never do so again. :)
