what would u say, debating for offroading

i have a friend that thinks im a "dumbass" for liking to go 4wheeling, and i never know any good thing to say in a debate.....im terrible in debates even if its something i know a lot about, i.e. offroading/jeeps

he asked why i like to go wheeling once, and i told him the biggest part is enjoying the great outdoors with friends with the same interests and getting muddy and all that....so he resonds with , "you could buy a 40 dollar fishing pole and go fishing instead of spend 30k on a jeep to go wheeling"....and i told him theres so much more to it then worrying about the price of things...plus i already have a good fishing pole and i to enjoy fishing but how can that even be compared to 4-wheeling a jeep or any truck for that matter

plus i told him, well with my jeep, i can get to lakes and things to go fishing that he cant even dream about with his monte carlo.....

but he says, how can i like something that all it consists of is bouncing around in a truck and getting stuck and breaking parts and denting and scratching ur ride........i just have no idea what to say bc, as i said, i suck at debating

so, do any of you have a friend(s) that are like that?...if so, what do u say, besides its a jeep thing..lol..ive used that B4 but it doesnt work

best thing you can do is take him out one time. that's all it will take...soon his monte carlo will be traded in on a jeep as well!

Some people just can't understand. Don't worry about it.

Take him off-road, but also let him drive at some point.. Then see if he gets it.. if not..don't worry about it. As for the monty... anything less than an old school design is bland...and how many monty drivers wave at each other?

drummerwookie 12-05-2005 04:47 AM

lol..ur all right...but ive tried to get him to go with me on a trip with some other jeeps and he wont do it...says he cant stand the idea and every time i randomly go offroad with him in the jeep he gets pissed..lol

and i would let him drive but he cant drive a standard transmission

For the non-believers I give them a slight smile and all knowing look (full of mystery)......
and just tell them: It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand!
let 'em be curious

Ask him why he drives to work? He could easily save the 20k that you would spend on a car and walk for the cost of a good pair of tennis shoes. That argument of his is just dumb.

To me 4 Wheeling is several things. First like you said it is a chance to explore the back country in places that most people wouldn't want to walk/hike to. I mean how many hikers would do 20 or 30 mile or longer backcountry camping trips and such? Also in our case out here in the desert I like the challenge of rock crawling (Can be the same for mud bogging back east). Running a trail with good friends and built rigs is one of the most relaxing things on earth I can think of doing. Some friends have tagged along and think that it is stressful and scary. I tell them that yeah it can be scary, but never stressful. Conquering the rocks in my opinion is what keeps me sane the rest of the week.

For now that's about what I got, but based on your friends arguments it sounds like his idea of fun is collecting James Bond DVD's and that's fine, some people just aren't cut out for wheelin.

JeepTales.com

Send him to www.JeepTales.com ...

Get him to listen to to a few of the PodCast from Palo Duro, or the Texas Spur last year.

We have over 9500 photos from off-roading events all over the country.

He may never come around; but it's worth a shot.

Some people just don't get it...and that's ok.
My son loves to skydive, I don't understand why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane!

all Id say is .. your opinion.. is much like an arsehole.. everyone has one. and they generally are filled with shit.

then Id pretty much suggest that his opinion is not welcome unless he is prepared to back it up by actually going out and giving it a go.and also say make it clear that this topic is now out of bounds until he pulls his head from his arse and wipes the shit from his lips :)

i just dont think he will ever understand it, and thats cool, but dont call me a dumb ass bc im doing what i want bc i have a job that allows me to do what i want...he cant even keep a job for more then a couple weeks b4 quiting.....usually i dont really care when he criticises me for it but the other night, when he called me a "dumbass" for liking to go wheeling, i got pretty pissed off and then called him a dumbass for playing guitar, just to get my point across...i asked him why the hell he thought i was a dumbass for it and he said he wasnt going any farther then that......i was like, oh thats a great way of backing it up.......hell, i havent even called him a dumb ass for quiting every job he has just bc its hard work or he doesnt like his boss....i have a couple other real good friends and they are both with me, we cant understand why he cant keep a job.....the next time he brings up wheeling, i should bring that up

Regarding the "all you do is bounce around, and get stuck, and break stuff".

The same could be said for any outdoor sport. Mountain biking, dirtbiking, football, skateboarding, rollerblading, snowboarding, skiing, etc. In all of them you can get hurt, in all of them you break stuff (either bodily or mechanical), and in all of em you AT LEAST get scratched up trying to reach the top. Part of the thrill is finding out where the "envelope" is, and pushing it to beyond where it's supposed to be.

Good thing you guys are friends. It's obvious he is jealous. I'd just let it go.
