Dent with surface rust

After the wash I also noticed a dent with surface rust on the side probably from someone opening his door and hitting my jeep (bastard). What should i do ? Bodyshop?
Thanks

:D YOU'RE DRIVING A JEEP AND YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT A DENT ???

:rofl::rofl: JIMBO

repoman100 12-18-2010 01:38 PM

No i want to know what to do to prevent rust from spreading

sheetsd66 12-18-2010 01:52 PM

1. Sell it to ESP123 for $19.95 before you tear anything else up! Then I'll buy it from him and he can double his money, or....
2. Carefully remove the rust and then hit it with some touch-up paint. If the dent really bothers you take it to the body shop and have them fix it for you or....
3. Put the mud and snow back on it and stay away from the car wash.

repoman100 12-18-2010 01:59 PM

I put touch up paint i hope the rust wont spread thanks

ESP 12-18-2010 03:11 PM

Just hit the other side and make a dent there too so your Jeep will feel balanced. I don't really know about the dent/rust though as I've just buffed out trail rash on mine no problem. Haven't had any dent yet. :)

Step 1: take jeep out wheeling and scrape both sides down a few trees and bushes. Step 2: quit whining to a bunch of off roaders about a wee bit of rust, rust like death is unstoppable.

No one forces you to read the post, if you dont mind rust on your jeep thats your thing, I do. Instead of wasting your time replying useless comments on my post maybe you should consider being helpfull to other questions being asked.

Have yourself a nice rusty Jeep lol

You can't. Rust is like cancer. It will ALWAYS spread. Hitting it with touch up paint doesn't fix anything because it will still continue to rust under the paint. In order to fix it, you have to remove ALL of the rust... every single tiny microscopic bit.

If it's just a door ding with a very thin coating of rust, you can probably get away with using a rust converter... something like Rustoleum Rust Reformer. It will chemically convert the rust into what is effectively a primer. THEN you can hit it with touch up paint.

And dude... this is the fastest way NOT to get help.

repoman100 12-18-2010 04:48 PM

Thanks daggo and Mike, I just found it surprising that rust already appeared its brand new ! I guess ill have the work done properly to avoid the rust from spreading i thought because the rust was so thin that the touch up paint would have done the job ...

mike_the_engineer 12-18-2010 05:04 PM

Yeah, bare steel will oxidize within seconds of getting wet.

ESP 12-18-2010 05:07 PM

When the person opened their door into your new Jeep, the dent broke through the primer and exposed a small bit of bare metal. Throw in one rain drop and bingo..

Petey_Mack 12-18-2010 05:18 PM

if its new take it back to the dealer

steam 12-18-2010 07:07 PM

Body shop time...especially if you live in place with snow and salt. Trust me it will get bigger and deeper the longer you wait. If it's a door panel youre in luck...less costly!

mike_the_engineer 12-18-2010 07:56 PM

You could always just swap out the door. :) Takes about 60 seconds.

Stop giving this guy sh*t about wanting to prevent rust. Not everyone buys a jeep just to tear the thing up. It's new, and he probably worked awhile to get it. It's just a pride of ownership deal, and I respect that.

Now for the dent, I suggest the rust converter as well. If you don't handle it now, your going to get bubbles of rust under your paint after several years.

Its not the door its the rear pannel

J.B. 12-18-2010 09:07 PM

Don't worry about the rust......Take care of the new Bride!!!!! :D

4Jeepn 12-18-2010 09:19 PM

You may have to wait until the weather is warmer but if you get a hair dryer and heat the dent (assuming its not bent over etc) for about 5-10 mins on high heat.. Then spray the area with a can of liquid air.. the dent should pop out. check youtube for video's.
