Water Pump
 
How long does it take to put one in? and does it require any special tools?

Water pump went on my Jeep and I need to replace it. Guy at the shop wants to charge me 3 hours to put it in. I bet i can do it faster and far cheaper... eh?

1998 Sport, 4.0L I6 (5 speed)

where can i get one and at a good deal....

It's a pretty easy job just take your time. No special tools required. Good time to change the belt and thermostat too.

Take TexasT's advice. Changing the thermostats a mandatory whenever ya gotta change out the water pump. Especially if ya might have gotten hot or your thermostat had to work hard. Try to find a fail safe one (one that stays open when it fails) if your willing to spend the extra money. Haven't done it yet myself, but looking to soon since my thermostat has been workin a little hard with the elec fan conversion I just got done with.

I would say do it yourself although I would do so only if I had a place out of the snow to do so.

Think it took me around 5hrs but I never do anything easy :)

Replacing the water pump was my first DIY job, and it really wasn't too bad. Like others have said replace the thermostat, and when I did my job I also replaced the radiator hoses. Not to discredit TRV, I would stay away from the fail safe thermostats. I seem to remember a lot of people having issues with them failing quickly upon installing them. I just bought a standard thermostat and haven't had any problems with it.

I'm glad to hear you didn't use one of those junky "Fail Safe" thermostats. I used one once. I put one in my '93 chevy, I ran it until it came up to operating temperature to test it. Once it reached operating temp the fail safe P.O.S locked open, then I had to tear it all apart again to put in a normal thermostat. Those things should be pulled off the shelf. Congrats on your first DIY repair.:punk:

You won't have too much trouble putting in the water pump. I did it in about 2 hours in my 98 4.0. There isn't anything too challenging. Basically, you drain the radiator, while taking the radiator shroud off along with the fan, loosen and remove the belt, take the top hose off the T-Stat housing, remove the pump and T-Stat housing once the block is drained enough, use gasket maker along with the new gasket and re-install new parts.... The biggest pain I had was getting the belt back on. I kept putting it on the wrong pulleys. Tools needed were a 15mm for the bolt that tightens the belt, and I think 10mm for the water pump and t-stat bolts, and I don't remember what the fan bolts were, but they were small. Maybe 10mm also.

Before you start...make sure you understand how to loosen and tighten the belt. It is not hard but can be frustrating if you don't understand the tensioner function. Two bolts, 15mm I think, one just locks it in position and the other to loosen and tighten the belt. The tensioner is by the PS pump. Also some thermostats have a small hole on one side. If you get one with the hole it is a drain hole and should always be mounted in the down position. I just replaced mine and it did not have the drain hole in the new one. Also have a supply of band aids...everything sharp hangs around the shroud and fan blade.

very good point. I had no idea what I was doing when I took the belt off my Cherokee a few years ago... the procedure is to find the tensioner pulley. Its on the right side of the motor if you are looking from the front end into the engine compartment. Once you find the pulley, crack the bolt loose that holds it in place. Just loosen it, don't remove it. Once the bolt is loose, look on the back side of the pulley for a very long bolt that goes through a bracket. Loosen that bolt, and you will notice that as you loosen the bolt the tensioner pulley will move on the bracket causing the belt to loosen.

Put a piece of cardboard in front of your radiator to protect it should you slip with any of your wrenches while taking off the fan blade and such. Hesco.com has some nice Hi-Flo water pumps and thermostat housings if you feel like upgrading. Kind of pricey though.
