Head unit in Grand Cherokee-need advice

I have a Christmas request of "fixing" my GF's stereo in her '02 Grand Cherokee.
I have not done any work on a Grand and am a little nervous about screwing up her ride. Anyway the head unit LOOKS the same as the one in my TJ-the issue is with left right/front rear speaker controls. Sometimes no sound at all sometimes only one speaker and not always same one-sometimes all start working at once and blast you out of the Jeep-since we have some down time with the Holiday she wants me to "fix" that for Christmas. My questions-are those head units the same? should I order a replacement from say Quadretec?
Does anyone else think wiring may be loose in plug? take apart clean reinstall all better? Should I take it to a stereo shop and let them "fix it" ? I have about average mech skills but don't like electronics or chasing electrical gremlins. How tough to take apart a Grands Dash to get to head unit/wiring?

Thanks for the help-open to suggestions :banghead:

Im not familiar with Grands either, but if you are gonna go about it yourself I think the first place I would check are the connections at the unit itself. Since it is sporatic and not always the same speaker, I would think it would have to be a connection there rather than at the speaker. Its worth a try and wont cost you anything other than time.
