Have a 88 Wrangler with inline 6. Alot of times going down the road when I start up inclines especially long inclines I seem to feel what seems to be slipping in 5th and sometimes 4th gear. This morning when I came out and got in the jeep, when I took off and got to 4th gear it seem to slip or skip some more. It finally smoothed out but then later in the ride started somewhat again. I guess i'm wondering if this could be something as simple as a tune up on the motor...i.e. plug wires, plugs, rotor button, cap...etc. or could it be like the slave cylinder or am I looking at probably having to replace the clutch? If so what needs to be done while in there? And possible cost to have the clutch replaced?

Sounds like a clutch to me, how many miles on the clutch? How is the clutch peddle? any binding or sticking, where in relation to the throw does it engage?

If you have slippage in gear it is probably the clutch assy. Or you have an oil leak and oil has gotten on the clutch disc.

There's 157000 miles on the vehicle but not sure if all those are on the clutch. I have owned the jeep for about 3 months. The clutch seems to engage about 1/4 to 1/2 way out from the floor. I don't have any grinding issues when I go into each gear. The slave cylinder, at least the one out under the hood on the firewall seems to be working properly, it's full of fluid as far as I know.....What does it generally cost to pay someone to change out the clutch?? or is it something I could do...I have a jeep manual like a haynes on it....I would have to borrow a jack for the tranny...I have done some work on engines before just never tore into a tranny or clutch assemble..
