Will I get pulled over
 
I just bought a light bar that mounts on the bumper and kc daylighters. I know the legal limit for lights is 55 watts. These are 100 watts. I am planning on aiming them very low so they hit the ground 30 feet in front of my jeep. If I run them on the road am I really going to be pulled over? They won't blind anyone and they will never be on on the highway. Has this happened to anyone here?

Probably depends where you are, and what kind of roads. If you are out in BFE rural roads, maybe not. Probably depends on the cop should he pass you. In the city, that might be a different answer. I know here in fort worth, some cops will pull people over in the city if the are driving with their driving/fog lights on, but it isn't very common.

Sorry don't know the answer to your question, just remember though, the glare off the road could blind an on-coming vehicle even if the lights aren't pointed directly at them.

How do they know they aren't street legal? Is there some sort of process they go thru? I don't live in or near the city. It's just a rural town. Would you suggest keeping them or returning them for a pair of 55 watters?

I wouldnt worry about it, I dont think they will notice or care but like they said above me, depends on the situation and the cop.

Who knows, cops can pull you over for the smallest thing to investigate further. I'm sure a light that is 100W compared to a 50W, might be something they would notice. No clue. I would keep them. Just be curtious to the other folks on the road, and maybe use them for mostly off road applications instead of driving. Know what I mean? I like my factory set, turn them on down these back roads for better light without running high beams and turn them off in the city.

If anything, you'll get a warning first.

I would say, keep em, try em out. If someone says something or you get pulled over. Take em off. If not, just enjoy them. There is no yes or no answer, I could drive without my seatbelt for 10 years and not get stopped. :D

This is what I am Hoping. I don't think it will be a problem since they are aimed so low. It's not like they are mounted on the windshield either

If you do get pulled over, just claim ignorance and tell them you will be replacing them now that you know or something. If they are mounted low by your regular headlights that might draw more attention tho by comparisson. Im assuming regular headlights are 55W?

Cops find all sorts of ways to cause people problems.. Id think since your aiming them so low you'd be ok though.. Might recommend re adjusting them to a different angle when offroad at night if you do go at night so as to have more light in different places..

This is a good idea. If I go off roading at night I'll be sure to aim them back up to make the trail light up more

I'd say run them as you would High beams like I run my windshield lights. When you see on coming cars then just turn them off. and then turn them back on after they've gone past :)

Given that you're concerned about it, why bother installing them and getting your heartrate up every time you see a cruiser? It's going to bother you everytime you drive your Jeep. Just exchange them for the set you believe are lawful. You'll be happier in the end regardless of whether you ever would have gotten pulled over.

I would suggest not running them on the road at all. It's not what they aren't meant for, and I can't see a lot of situations where you would actually need them on road.

As a person who is employed "to cause people problems", I can say that if the light is designed for off road use, then use it off road. Lights designed for on road use tend to have narrower beams and do not blind oncoming drivers when used correctly. As mentioned in a previous post, use courtesy and common sense and "Cops" won't cause you problems. :doh:

Since you are a police officer your opinion means the most here. These lights are marketed as driving lights so they do have a narrower beam. No kc hilights are DOT approved as is the case with many auxiliary lights whether legal or not. Would you pull me over if they were aimed much lower than my low beams?

Some states have specific laws as to how many lights maybe lighted at one time on the front of a vehicle. If the lights are not blinding oncoming traffic and aren't violating a state equipment code you should be good to go. You do need to check your states laws. The easiest thing to do is ask a local Officer. They will be able to not only tell you the law but give their opinion as to your lights in particular as they'll be able to see them. :)

With the light aimed low, you will also be blinding people as you crest hills. I say unless you live in a low traffic rural area, keep the off road lights off road. Install a set of 55w lights instead of having people mutter "f'n Jeeps" every time they get blinded by you.

I'm also one of these people, of the municipal variety, and I would stop you for it. Overly bright lights cause a problem for lots of other drivers, more than you would probably realize.

If its something you are concerned about, as said before, dont do it. Or use them as brights. Dont use them often on city streets.

All of these are very good points. I am going to return them and grab a set of 55w. I figure the headlights are 55w and the stock fogs are 24w so the second set of 55's will be plenty and then there is nothing to pull me over for provided it is aimed properly. Eventually I might buy the daylighters again and put them on the windshield.

Does anyone have any suggestions on 55w driving/fog lights?

KC makes a replacement for the stock TJ bumper mounted fogs, they are 55w and plug right into the factory harness. And they come with a stone guard. Pretty sweet lights.

before you do all that, see if you can just replace the 100w bulb with a 55w bulb. my ipf driving lights use h3 bulbs, so there is a selection of wattages out there. just an idea.

Most states will make you cover them on road. Meaning that 100W will be ok as long as they are covered when not in use. But as others have stated 100w is pretty over kill for street use.

I don't think that KC makes a street legal light at all. So, if you have a knowledgeable LEO, you're burned, especially in VA and CA where they take it more seriously.

Regardless, a "driving light", one that you'll use while on the streets, has to be wired to only be able to be burning while the highbeams are on. That's an important criteria to follow.
You're allowed to run foglights with the lowbeams but only should when conditions merit their use; they also have to be wired to turn off when you flick to highbeam.

In most states you'll get left alone if you run a 55 watter the way I'm describing. In most of the red states you'll be okay even with the 100 watters ---- but why risk it?
It's not like you'll out-drive the 55s in a Jeep anyhow.

You'll do more good by replacing your headlight assemblies anyhow and running better bulbs. The light from a set of quality reflectors/bulbs is sharper, better focused, brighter, and less glaring to oncoming drivers.
That's win/win for you and other motorists.

Just use common sense and be aware of the vehicle coming your way. I have mine hooked up to my high beams. That way i have control at my finger tips at all times.

I believe in general, the only "legal" way to have off-road lights is to either wire them so they only come on with your high beams, or they have to be covered on road, or you have to have a kill switch not accessable from the drivers seat.

My kill switch is mounted next to all my regular switches, but that was the easiest way to wire it, and I need to do a compleat re-wire on my lights someday, too many wires going every where.

I was advised by the local PD here to keep the covers on the lights and I know in some states that is the law if you are driving on the road. I only use my lights for off-road so it's no big deal to me.

I have a set of PIAA lights on the windshield which are also well over 55w. I have not had a problem with using them. If you use them on the road just turn them off when another car is approaching. You shouldn't have an issue.
