Dunes

So let me ask, being in Michigan, how many people have done the dunes, and how many want too! Silver Lake Dunes are calling and I can not wait.

computeruser 01-09-2011 01:36 PM

Been there. It's amusing every once in a while. It would be more fun if there weren't so damned many people there; my vote is for a weekday visit, if possible.

Lets plan on the dunes!!!!!!! We can all get together and show the Dunes what Jeeps are all about!!!!!!

Lawngnome 01-26-2011 02:40 AM

I cannot wait for spring to arrive also to test my jeep on the dunes. Like some of you, I have been there but never with a Jeep. This year will be my first time. When you all plan on going send me a PM to let me know. If i don't have to work count me in.

I was there with my JK twice last summer. It is not something I would want to do every weekend, but is definately worth going to. It does get pretty busy on weekends. It is better for wheeling during the week, but seeing all the different vehicles is part of the fun. I would recommend both a week and a weekend trip.

briancash1013 04-04-2011 08:42 AM

i would be open to a trip to the dunes, keep me posted

Booger's Jeep 04-06-2011 09:49 PM

We have been on the dunes several times over the past few years. We have a seasonal spot up there at Silver Creek RV Resort, so we FINALLY got it done and purchased our TJ this winter. We will be up there over Easter when we take our 5th wheel up for the summer. Get at me and let's rip it up!!

Hey bbqfreak, I'm not sure just yet. I may have a family reunion to attend, but if that falls through, we will be there for sure. I take it you will be up there for the 4th?

I don't own a Jeep...YET but if I get one just in time for summer are there any requirements for your vehicle? Can I use the stock tires? I've never been to the dunes but my cousin has and she says it's a blast. So I'm TRYING to get my $ together and find that Jeep Wrangler for the right price but I just wanted to ask if there's any special requirements so I don't get turned away. Thanks.

As far as the legal part you will need:
1. An ORV sticker, $16.25 at the gate
2. State Park Pass, which should be a $10 sticker for your license plate
3. Dune Flag, which can be purchased at local shops for about $20, mounted on the front of the Jeep. If you have questions on mounting just ask here.

Pick up a tow strap, a tire pressure gage, a CB if you can swing it, and try to ride with a group of people just so someone is there if you get stuck.

I rode a couple times last year and again this year on stock suspension, stock size 30x9 All Terrains (aired down of course), and chased down the big boys all day. Sure I got stuck but here and there but still went over the big hills and had a blast.

I am going labor day weekend with a group of friends, I am the only one with a jeep. I will also be going the 4th of july weekend

92greensahara 06-01-2011 07:06 AM

the dunes are awesome. i went there a few years ago didnt have my jeep though but i rented one to take out it was still fun with the stock jeeps they have to rent

rwhitmore74 04-08-2012 12:37 PM

Make sure you bring tire pressure down to 6 psi. You will be able to go anywhere in a stock Jeep. The signs say under 18 psi but you need to go more.

phittie1100 04-09-2012 08:54 AM

6psi is a bit too low for stock rims - unless you are running bead locks or inner air locks, 12-15psi should do it for most Jeeps and will have a lot less risk of rolling the tire off the rim.

Don't forget to recheck your pressure after some time on the dunes - the increased friction from running at lower psi will warm up the tires a bit, increasing your internal air pressure. The down side is if you roll back to camp on tires that were 12psi warm, you may wake up the next day to nearly flat tires.

rwhitmore74 04-09-2012 06:32 PM

I lower my pressure to 6 psi all the time. Been going for 3 years. I have 33 12.5 15 tires on stock rims. Never had a problem.

denisbaldwin 04-10-2012 09:32 AM

I did them back in 1996, 1998 and again in 1999 in my first YJ and in my TJ.

Bart113000 05-03-2012 08:27 PM

Does the sand pose any issues with clean up or will it cuase any damage?

rwhitmore74 05-06-2012 12:20 PM

Besides having sand everywhere. I have never hadst problem there.

rwhitmore74 06-19-2012 11:02 PM

Just got home from the dunes. What a great day!

I am officially jealous. We love the dunes. Only problem this time of year is that "our" dunes are at about 120 degrees. We go to Glamis, Gordons Well and Buttercup, all part of the Los Algodones Sand Dunes in Cali.
Took my TJ deep in the dunes last trip, took easy lines and got pretty darn far.
As our bumper sticker on our trailer says......
"DUDE, YOU GOTTA AIR DOWN!"
Pictures, we need pictures!!
