Pecking noise
I have had my 95 Wrangler for a month now, (and I love it) it has 140k miles, when I start it up, it is as quiet as a church mouse, but after about 2 or 3 minutes, a pecking noise starts, I cant pin point it....if you rev the engine to about 1000 rpms it stops, I thought it was the exaust manifold, because it was leaking, so I replaced it, still the same thing...........ANY IDEAS..oh, oil pressure is good, power is good, starts good, do they have a heat damper or anything...............THANKS

Usual suspect is a baby wood pecker stuck in cylinder 3 . They find their way in there through the exhaust valve and get stuck

Oh I'd say about 6 inch lift should do it :D

I think I have the same noise you are talking about, the only I figured it could be is the hydraulic lifters in the block. So you would get that ticking sound, try putiing some lucas engine treatment in the crankcase. It may quiet it down a little. Or you could replace the hydraulic lifters, but its recommended to also replace the cam, since there will be obvious wear on the lobes. hope this helped.

I have already tried the lucas, no help, I have asked several peope, and they have had the same problem, and have driven them for years with the noise, its 95 with 140k on it, they say that is low am new at this, so I guess will live an learn

how much of a job is replacing the lifters

pecker noises should be masked at all times. i cropped it, but youens will get the picture.

to replace the lifters you have to remove the valve cover, remove rockers, and you might need a specialty tool to get at the lifters at the bottom of the push rods. In order to replace the cam, is where things get "fun". Remove the grill, the radiator, timing belt, and anything else that is in the way; should be able to slide the cam right out. be sure to mark the placement of everything, in order to not have to reset the timing. I would highly recommend to get the factory service manual, I found my on ebay for 30$. Its a life saver. I hope I helped at least a little. PS- 140k on the engine is considered middle aged, mine has 155k and still running like a champ.

A bad lifter will sometimes go away with a higher will a bad wrist pin on a piston. Using a mechanics stethoscope or long screwdriver, place it on the valve cover above each rocker, you should be able to hear the bad lifter if it is one. Do the same thing under the jeep against the oil pan, if its a rod bearing or wrist pin you will hear it loud and clear.
If its a lifter noise it might just be a worn rocker which is easy to replace, if its the lifter...sometimes they can be cleared by pushing down on the rocker with engine running enough to make the lifter compress, sometime they get a piece of crap in them and this sometimes clears them...
