Jeep Wrangler YJ Shifter stuck

I got in my jeep wrangler yj 4cyl 5 speed and noticed the shifter would not move. It only does that when its cold, it's about 10F. I have to hold down the clutch when I start it because its stuck in gear but, the stick is in the neutral position. Atleast, I think it's in gear. She starts right up with no problem. The stick moves about 1/4 inch in any direction. I am pushing about 65 pounds on it and it wont budge. When i let off the clutch a little, it bogs down but wont roll. Is the transfer case just froze?

any help would be appreciated.

From what i have read on this, it is most likely the trans fluid. Its seems a lot of people have shifting problems in extremely cold weather. The solution from what ive read is to change your tranny fluid and go with a 30w instead of the 90w or whatever is in it.

could have ice in there. Have you checked for water before it started reaching below freezing temps?

Not yet, I'm not sure where the drain plug is located. I did take off the 2 rubber boots and when I removed the seal at the bottom of the stick it had rusty water drops around it. It may have alot of water in it. When I drive for 20-30 min. at about 60mph black oil drains into the passenger side floor board. that may be why the water drops were rusty, all the oil drained out? I only had the jeep for 3 months and its my first vehicle so I'm new to this. I need a whole rebuild kit to stop the leaking, right? I will look for the plug tomorrow and see what comes out when I drain it. what type of fluid do you recommend refilling it with?
