Rust "Hot Spots"/Problem Areas on TJ

Hey, everybody,

As you can see, I'm new to Jeeps, but I'm loving it so far. I can see why all y'all are hooked.

I'm the proud new owner of a 2003 TJ, and I've got a general "man on the street" question:

Are there any areas on this model that are prone/susceptible to rust?

I did a quick inspection of mine and it looks like I'll be doing some preventative body work this summer around all of the lower body flanges (surface rust - nothing major), but I wanted to know if there are any other areas I should keep my eye on.

I've owned a grab bag of other vehicles, from muscle cars, to older off-road stuff, and I know that they each had their quirky areas that were make or break for a restoration (areas on the frame that collected snow and salt, areas that snow and salt would melt, leak down and sit, etc, etc...).

My goal is to put 500,000 on this Jeep, and I think I can do it! That's how much I love driving this thing.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

top of fenders/wells like to get rust bubbles, the rear corners of tub outside sometimes have rust spots, and basically all the hinges/anywhere a bolt goes into your jeep, esp on doors/windshield frame piece. Underneath, Im sure theres a whole slew of places, thats why you always wash underneath :D check what he said^ and look around some day its nice.

rear corner of tub, to the right of the tailgate under the spare tire carrier. I swear at least half of the TJs out there are rocking this one. I googled "rust spot jeep" and this was the 3rd pic!

Thanks for all of the input so far! I now know what I'm gonna check first.

I did notice the hinges - on both the doors and the "swing gate" - I didn't see rust, but I noticed a "whitening" around those areas. Aluminum? Magnesium? Are those a moly? If so, what?

Frame. all of it. Body where the body mounts are, those rails.

The frame where it bends up to go over the rear axel.

Its something from the reaction of the unlike metals used in the hinge, very common problem. Best thing is to just replace em once they freeze up imo, I've been trying to prolong mine by greasing em a lot
