Wiring a YJ for Trailer Brakes

Hi All

I recently acquired a utility trailer that has electric trailer brakes installed. This trailer weighs 1300lbs unloaded and will weigh 2000lbs fully loaded.

Has anybody wired up their YJs with a trailer brake controller?

My '95 YJ is stock with 105K miles. It is a 4.0l, with a 5 speed, stock suspension and 235/R75 x 15 Pirelli Scorpion Mud/Snow tires.

The jeep already has a Hidden Hitch frame mounted hitch rated at 3000 lbs and a 4 prong trailer wiring kit installed. I will be adding to this a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 controller...
Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller - Proportional Tekonsha Brake Controller 90885

and wiring up the brake controller using this wiring kit...
Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit - 10 Gauge etrailer Brake Controller ETBC7

My questions:
  • Where to install the controller in the cab
  • How to get power cables from the battery through the firewall to the controller inside the cab
  • Where to mount the circuit breakers inside the engine compartment.
  • How/Where to route the cables from the battery back to the trailer hitch
  • Where to mount the trailer wiring connector/socket on the back of the jeep.
I will post some pictures shortly.

TIA

Trailer Wiring Questions

Hi All

My choices for locating the controller under the dash are either here.....

or here...

I believe I will have to go with the location shown in the second picture since there is an RF sensor for my alarm system in the same location as the controller in the first pic but, according to the brake controller instructions it needs to be 12" away from any RF sources.

The next question has to do with getting the battery power wiring from the battery through the firewall to the controller. The most likely way is through this fitting/port.....

It looks like I can poke a hole over the existing wiring and run my cables through there.
Is this the best way to do it?

I also need to mount a couple of these circuit breakers near the battery......

Is this location on the firewall behind the battery OK to use? ....

What is on the other side of this firewall?
I do not want to accidentally drill a hole though the heater core or computer, etc..
