best tire size for 2.5 inch lift

im getting the RC 2.5 inch lift on my 2001 TJ. it is my DD but does see the trail sometimes. what is the best tire size for me. i dont wanna regear. so im thinking 31's or 32's. will 31's look goofy? im trying to save some gas mileage so thats why im asking. thanks !

oIIIIIIo 01-21-2011 11:36 PM

I would go with 31's if you also want to go offroading a bit.

sandro 01-22-2011 06:26 AM

that's the lift i was looking at getting ! I like the 31s, been looking at a lot of pics on here, and i think 31s are about right. Just go to google images and type in wrangler 2 inch lift with 31x10.5 tires. I don't do any serious off roading, and don't want to lift too much due to the other mods needed to do it right and avoid wobble/vibration.
send us pics when you get done ok?

Yep 31's look good with a small lift and work well on the trail

I have a 2.5" lift and am running 31s with a 4.0 5spd, and 3.07s (for now.) I assume you're also running the stock 3.07s by looking at your profile.

The 31s will probably handle about anything I throw at them, but I will admit that I wish I had gotten 33s for the look. However, the 3.07 gears just wouldn't take them from all that I hear.

Even with the 31s it's already a dog in 5th gear, so I am inclined to believe the multitude of posters here that say don't run anything bigger than 31s w/ little gears. Judge for yourself if 31s look right, but with your current set-up you really should not run anything bigger than that or your performance will really suffer on the highway. Also, it will probably eventually damage your AT with all the shifting in/out of OD it will do. Your OD will be nearly useless.

my 31s on a 2.5" lift:

That lift height will easily accomodate a 32x11.50 tire. The only question is if you have factory or aftermarket wheels which would dictate how well that size tire would work so far as its side-to-side clearance is concerned. Factory wheels have too much backspacing for an 11.5" wide tire which will cause the inside sidewall to rub on the upper spring perch in some conditions. That size tire would work for pretty much any aftermarket wheel though since they have less backspacing which positions the tire a little further out of the wheelwell.

I agree , I'd say 32/11.50. 31s look to small with that much lift to me .

if you have a 3speed auto, hit the 33s, if you have a 5 speed, you may want to stick with 32s.

Loic 01-22-2011 05:33 PM

I have a 4cyl 5 speed with 2 inch lift and 31s. works good for me :
here only 12 psi in the tire, no lockers..

not me but thats where we went through, 31s and 2 inch lift IS very capable, sure it would have been easier with some 35's or 37's but where is the fun in that ! :-)

Yes. 33's should fit with flat fenders. Thought about doing this with mine instead of a BL, but ultimately I will need the BL to do a tummy tuck and gas tank skid.

Coasttrash 01-22-2011 07:28 PM

ha exact same thing doing to mine, really dont want a BL but for a tummy tuck I need too.

sandro 01-22-2011 09:40 PM

im a newbie so thanks to yall for all the advice. If i ever get my jeep out of the shop (getting new engine) i will probably go with the 31s when the money permits. I visited it the other day and was sad, there were pieces every where, but it was kinda cool. I dont want to mess with wheel spacers, and im keeping the factory rims, so it sounds like 31s. also someone made a good point about it running like a dog on the highway with 32s or bigger. I cant have that!
thanks again

GoldenSahara00 01-23-2011 11:01 AM

like I said it depends on transmission and engine how it runs with 31s compared to 33s. heck people with the new jks say they run 35s and dont care. then again I wouldnt mind 35s on my minivan. ahem. but anyways 33s with a 4.0 and auto is actually not bad at all from alot of people. thats the setup im going to. I run 31s right now and have plent of power.

adawg38 01-23-2011 06:27 PM

I'm running that same RC lift but with the 3/4" pucks to make it a 3.25" lift and 31's and I like the look and way it drives. When I take her out wheeling I have plenty of flexing room too.

UnlimitedLJ04 01-23-2011 06:44 PM

31x10.50's unless you have added bumpstop extensions. 32's would need 1" extension, 33's would need 2" extension.

tlarm139 01-23-2011 10:11 PM

thanks ! and @adawg38 that looks really good, thats how i want mine to look, its not a big gap between tires and the body, it looks good !

32s with 2". 307 gears 3 speed auto. Runs great on freeway and around town. But am regearing soon for some trails.

The kit doesn't come with bump stop extentions but Rough Country sells the 2" on their site for $15 a pair and like UnlimitedLJ04 said on 33's you will want the 2"

Even with the 1.25 BL included?

The bumpstops keep your shocks from bottoming out and destroying themselves. The body lift only helps with your clearance when flexed and also helps for a tummy tuck.

brandonchino 01-24-2011 08:15 PM

I'm still a noob but I'm running 32's on 16 rims with a 1.25" body lift and rubicon springs. Drives fine on the highway with an Auto and performed well wheelin the few times I've gone.

91renegade-YJ 01-24-2011 09:04 PM

I have a 97 with a 3" lift and 33" on it. I have no issues with it at all. Slow to take off at the line but it is a jeep and I like driving in it so not concerning.
