front axle question

dumb question probably......i bought my 2000 tj with 35's and a 4inch lift.

question is i have been having a clicking sound come from the front passenger side and been told it could be a million diff components, question is since it has such upgrades would it be in my best interest to replace the entire front axle such as a bolt in dana 44....gonna cost around $2500 it appears but would it be worth it in the long run? what component would be most likely the problem thats causing the clicking? and if i did the front axle would i have to do the back as well?

Check your U-Joints

Lockright?

Whatever the issue is, swapping out the Dana 30 for a Dana 44 like the Rubicon uses is not going to give you the strength boost some may think it does.

I'd rather see you figure out what is clicking and fix it. U-joint, axle shaft ear holding the u-joint, bearing, gear, or perhaps as Lance says above, there is some kind of an automatic lunchbox locker like an Aussie or Lockright up front. :)

My first thoughts were a locker, u joints, or bearings. If you were to do an axle swap, you would have to make sure that you have matching gear ratios in the front and back. What rear axle do you have?

As mentioned above, if it is a locker then you do not have to fix anything. If it is anything else, it is going to be a lot less expensive to fix rather than buying and installing the dana 44.

honestly my options are pretty limited and i am going to just jack up the jeep and fix the problem....i am currently getting things in order to get married so dumping a bunch of money into the jeep isnt something i can afford at the moment...

at the local garage i stopped to get some welding done and the mech told me the clicking could very well be an axle sleeve or something like that....sound right? the clicking is getting worse and everything appears to be in good tight working condition

Check the u joint and dump as much money into the Jeep now cause once your are married you will not be able to spend a dime on it. Ha ha just kidding. Congrats on getting married. 11 years now and it keeps getting better.

click went away...not sure why but i took it and got the front end greased anyway....and taking your advice and dumping everything i got into the jeep before the wedding lol

I used to put a playing card on my bike wheel when I was a kid. Maybe it was like that and just fell off. Married 38 years and we raised two boys. One has a TJ and the other a CJ. Good woman...right?

lancetkenyon 01-31-2011 12:22 PM

Once you get past the 15 year mark on your marriage, then you can start spending money on the Jeep again. Trust me........

my playing card musta fell outta my tire and my woman is so good to me she told me for my bday she wanted to know what i wanted for my jeep lol
