Tool to cut bumper?

I wana cut my stock front bumper down, I have a tube on right now and my stocks sittin in my garage, and my wheels started turnin, thinkin of a lil project to do. I want to cut it down stubby, and then eventually make my own grill gaurd for it perhaps. but in the mean time, what would be the best tool to cut it with? I dont have much at my disposal, but If I knew what would work best I can borrow from a buddy and get it done. I dont think a sawsal with metal blade would do the work haha. the rest of the stuff I have is all wood working, I dont own a good metal saw.

Sawzall should do the trick...probably have to file down the edge.

I don't see why not..i've read bout it being done that way

Jp90Talon 01-26-2011 01:37 PM

I would personally use an angle grinder but thats me.

nick50471 01-26-2011 01:42 PM

X2 on the angle grinder and a cut-off wheel.

GoldenSahara00 01-26-2011 01:43 PM

Ill see what I can get into. If I have to saws all it, I have a grinder that I can hit the edges with, and I have bedliner I was gona hit it with after. thanks all!

If I can find someone with an angle grinder Ill use that

jeepjones 01-26-2011 01:44 PM

X3 angle grinder with cutoff disc, just make sure you don't bend the disc while cutting or the thin cutoff disc will explode.

Cons_Table 01-26-2011 01:45 PM

I would also use a cutoff wheel/grinder.

Pic?? Wanna see where you cut it at? how far back

domeshots 01-26-2011 02:37 PM

grinding wheel

YJman 01-26-2011 02:43 PM

is an angle grinder the same as a die grinder? I use a die grinder to cut all the metal i need to. Works great. Got my electric die grinder for I think $35 on harbor freight.

Ibuildembig 01-26-2011 03:01 PM

Sawzall or airsaw for me

ajorosa 01-26-2011 03:09 PM

Sawzall with a new metal cutting blade and patience to ensure a straight cut.

Jp90Talon 01-26-2011 03:10 PM

And either way make sure you wear eye protection!

ajorosa 01-26-2011 03:14 PM

My sawzall hasn't let me down yet. One of the best gifts my wife ever gave me.

GoldenSahara00 01-26-2011 06:21 PM

I will use eye protection, I rather like my eyes :) haha. I think I am gona cut both bumpers down and put either hooks or D-rings on, along with a homemade stinger/grill gaurd. Im gona do this as my spring project but Im just in the planning stages, thinking things through. What would the best way to connect the D-Rings and stinger? I know I could weld, but I dont have a welder but I could probably get access to one If I need to. other than bolting on are there any other options? I want to take my tubes off and resell them, and run these custom ones til I can afford an XHD or similar/winch.

GoldenSahara00 01-26-2011 10:38 PM

Bumppp, anyone have pics of a stock they made into a stubby?

yjkid95 01-26-2011 11:39 PM

Look in my jeep profile its a yj but it still counts. Do what I did. Build some muscle and go oldschool. Hacksaw :punk: really I didn't have a choice the power was out I was bored and one end of my bumper had a nasty battle wound.

OsageJeep 01-26-2011 11:45 PM

get a grinder and a little zip wheel..thin as possible in my opinion..makes it go much faster

This is what I'm going to use come spring. It'll guarantee a square cut but I'll most likely taper it so I can reuse my flat milk jug replacements.

GoldenSahara00 01-27-2011 05:26 PM

YJ kid, that looks good, I just got to figure out how I want to add a bar or somethin to it, or just leave it cut for the mean time. I know I can do some bolt on stuff, just not sure if its worth. I was thinking gettin some tube, and get it bent, down to a base, where I weld it to a piece with two bolt holes on each side, to use stock bolt holes to bolt on.

Schmo 01-27-2011 05:58 PM

I chopped mine down with a cutoff wheel. I liked the way the factory had the stock one cut with an angle vs. the straight cuts I'd seen others do so I followed the stock lines but trimmed off enough to give me the clearance and approach I wanted. Rattle canned it Satin. The other stuff if off a Womb Raider and then we welded some tabs on the bar for the lights.

Looks good man, I like how you bolted that diamond plate on, I could actually diamond plate and black out a good bit of it. I got two cans of spray on bedliner too so that will be used :) I wish I had a welder, that will be another one on the list of future investments. hahaha. I will see what I can get into bar wise to put on it. more than likely it will just be a temp replacement til I can sell of my tubes and buy a better one. I think I am going to cut down the back as well, then reenforce with a steel plate and put D-rings in. I obviously stil have a bit of planning to do but thats for the pics!

Yeah the diamond plate and hoop came off my buddy's Tomb Raider . . . originally I'd had my highlift on the front bumper . . . stupid idea . . . after removing the brackets I had a bunch of holes that the diamond plate covered up nicely!!!
